I think I am speaking for a lot of college students when I say that I really, truly started to appreciate my mom to the full extent once I moved out of my house and into my dorm room. It wasn't until freshman year of college that I realized how incredible my mother actually is, and how thankful I am for everything that she's done for me throughout the years.
My mom has been my chauffeur, my personal chef, my therapist, my personal shopper and my biggest supporter throughout my entire life. I know I didn't show her the amount of appreciation she deserved in high school, though. I mean, does any teenager show their gratitude to their parents? While living under their roof and disobeying the rules, I don't think any teen is their parents' biggest fan. However, things definitely change when you move out and realize how much you had it made throughout your teen years.
Once I was on my own, I immediately missed my mom. I never thought that I would sit on my dorm bed at night, alone, wanting to call her and just hang out with her. I begged my mom throughout the first weeks of college to come pick me up and let me go home for the weekend. All I wanted was another one of her amazing vegan dinners, a session of her wise life advice or a Netflix marathon with her. I missed her motherly sense and how she could always tell if something was going on with me.
Now that I'm in college, I know that my mom and I have grown closer. She is definitely one of my best friends. I text her when I need help finding an outfit for formal, when I'm having drama with my roommates or when I just need to vent about life. She is always there with no shortage of photos of my cats to send whenever I am feeling down. And somehow, she always knows exactly what to say to me when I'm in a sticky situation and need some help.
My mom is one of the strongest women I know. She's been through so much in her life and always manages to radiate a positive attitude. She gives her all to everything she does, and has the biggest heart on the planet. She has taught me to be open minded and confident in myself and to treat everyone with love and respect no matter who they are.
I truly don't know where I would be without her. Mom, I am so grateful to have you in my life. Thank you for always being there for me with no hesitation, and for forgiving me when it comes to the ridiculous mistakes I have made. I can only hope to be a mother like you someday. You are my inspiration and role model.
