This is for the woman who might become the education secretary. There are some fundamental things she needs to keep in mind if she is controlling financial aid for students nationwide. She has said that she has not, and neither have her children, ever had the necessity for financial aid. Which is something that most college students dream about. Never having to worry about the burden of money, or worrying their parents half to death as they dig themselves into a never-ending hole of debt; that is truly a fantasy for most college students across the country. Myself included. So I wanted to tell Mrs. DeVos what it’s like to struggle through financial insecurity and let her know that it’s a serious issue and should be taken seriously. Not flitted away because she never had to experience that so it must not have happened for anyone else.
This is for the millions of college students working two jobs just to pay loans month to month. For the high school seniors debating back and forth whether or not to even go to college because they wouldn’t know how to pay for it. And for the high school sophomores maintaining straight A’s while working night shifts at McDonald's saving every cent so their parents don’t have to go further into debt. These are the children who have always had to worry about money. Who grew up too fast so they could help make things easier for their parents. They know what it feels like to live the life of a child with all the concerns and responsibilities of an adult.
Betsy DeVos, you have no idea how lucky you have been, how many people would love to be in your shoes. If you become the secretary of education, I hope that you understand the weight of that job. You need to understand that there are people struggling to go to college in the first place. You have no idea the fear they feel when they aren’t able to get loans and they see there time, to further their education, come to a close. It is truly the most disheartening feeling. Please, do what is right for students every where and expand financial aid. Let it aid the people who need it the most. People don’t need college to be free, they need it to be affordable. It’s hard when 4 years at school costs the same as a house. Financial insecurity is a heavy burden to bear on one's shoulders, even though everyone doesn’t have to carry it, doesn’t mean it doesn’t weigh other’s down.
