We've reached that oh-so-glorious time of the year. Halloween is officially over and everyone is getting into the holiday spirit. My roommate is listening to Christmas music, I can hear "Elf" playing down the hall and we have officially entered the two-month holiday called Christmas. If you have found yourself wearing ugly sweaters, jamming to "All I Want For Christmas is You" or baking mass amounts of Christmas cookies, then this one is for you.
Thank you.
Thank you for getting so into your favorite holiday that a lot of people are beginning to see Thanksgiving as a break from school and a day to eat a lot of food as preparation for their mass amounts of Black Friday shopping. It's not like Thanksgiving is a time to be thankful for what you have and those around you, it's about getting to sleep until noon instead of getting up for work, or that 8 a.m. class that you regret taking, and getting ready for the intense of Christmas shopping the next day.
Thank you for listening to Christmas music for a full two months. The same songs on loop for two months every year for 18 years never get old. Would you like to play "Carol of the Bells?" I know every word thanks to my choir director having us start singing it in October. Why don't you play "Frosty the Snowman?" I'll never get sick of that.
Thank you for starting a national debate over the red cups from Starbucks. It's the holiday season and that means that the cups have to show Christmas, right? Screw Hanukkah and Kwanzaa, all that we care about is the fat guy in a red suit.
Thank you for already decorating for the holidays. Your Christmas trees are up, houses are covered in lights, and mistletoe has been hung. Where are the hand turkeys? We spent weeks making them in elementary school to decorate our houses for Thanksgiving while we learned so much about the importance of this holiday. We do celebrate, but our focus is still heavily on Christmas.
The Detroit Thanksgiving Day parade ends with Santa getting a key to the city. That's where he should come, at the end of Thanksgiving. Don't get me wrong, I love Christmas and the whole holiday season just as much as the next girl. I am not a Christmas hater, but we have taken it too far. Let's bring back Thanksgiving!
