We see the advocating for curvy women, and we also see a side fighting for the girls who are naturally skinny all over the media, but what if you aren't either of those? I consider myself to be an "in-between" girl, and when it comes to finding clothes, articles or looks to help me shop or feel better about my body, the options are slim to none. What can happen in our society so that we as "in-between" girls have a voice as well?
The dreaded shopping trip:
Shopping can be stressful for anyone. For a girl who doesn't consider herself skinny or curvy it can especially be a challenge to find clothes that specifically fit to your body type. Most stores now tailor to plus-size woman and you can always find clothes for a double 0 girl. How can you know what clothing is going to fit you best? Always trying on clothes to see if it looks as well as it does on the mannequin, not being able to find outfit ideas on Pinterest and seeing most clothing brands that now carry "one size fits all" isn't ideal for your body. Popular brands are starting the trend of "one size fits all." A woman with C-cup breasts knows this isn't the case. A shirt that's supposed to go to your waist will now turn into a tight crop top. How do you feel when you see someone with smaller breasts that can pull off the shirt how it looks on the mannequin in front of the store? I can relate to how you are feeling. You feel insufficient and possibly hopeless with finding clothes that will look good on your body. Your shopping trips shouldn't be a loss. You will learn what looks good on your body and what does not. You will be able to find clothes that look just as incredible as they would on someone thinner or heavier than you. Rally up the confidence to show others what you like to wear!
The body-categorizing, magazine articles:
If you have ever read Cosmo or Seventeen magazine, you have seen the articles that categorize woman's body types and proceed to explain what looks the best on each. What if your body type isn't exactly in that magazine? How can you find advice on what to wear? These categories have a harmless purpose but can't possibly categorize every body type in the world. The important thing to remember is that everyone looks different. Not one woman has the same shaped booty as the other. The woman that consider themselves to have a "pear" shape don't actually have the same shape. You can't control what the media prints. You can understand your body type and focus on what is beautiful about it!
What should change:
The body image propaganda should focus the idea that every body type needs advocating and every body type is beautiful, not just the curvy girls who are called "fat" or the thin girls who are called "too skinny." I believe our society is on the right track to equality of body positivity, but always remember that no matter what size you are, what type of clothing is available to you or what the media says, you are beautiful!
