Ashley O's 'On A Roll' Actually Slaps And I Don't Care If It's From Black Mirror

Music originating from the characters of a movie or show can still be good; convince me otherwise.

Ashley O's 'On A Roll' Actually Slaps And I Don't Care If It's From Black Mirror

I finally got around to watching the newest episodes of season five of Black Mirror, Netflix's much-loved sci-fi/horror anthology series. While "Rachel, Jack, and Ashley Too" was not my favorite episode of the season, I found the tunes from the episode stuck in my head. In particular, Ashley O's single, 'On A Roll', kind of started growing on me.

I was shocked to see the song included in Spotify's 'Today's Top Hits' and 'Pop Rising' playlists, listed beside songs from artists such as Justin Bieber, Juice WRLD, Lil Nas X, and Camila Cabello. I put my AirPods on and listened to it just for kicks. But, the thing is, I actually started to like the song. I even added it to my 'Summer 2019' playlist and turn it on when I need a fun song to listen to.

The episode touches upon the issue of split identities and struggling personalities faced by artists who deal with the constant pressures of being in the spotlight. Because of Ashley O being played by Miley Cyrus and other various characteristics of the fictional singer (such as her wig and sparkly outfits), fans are quick to assume that the episode is a direct reference to Hannah Montana. After all, it was pretty evident that Miley had some struggles with juggling both of the identities, along with being her own, independent person, separate from Hannah.

People usually don't take music from a fictional artist as seriously as they would a singer from the real world. The music coming from the speakers and radios around us seem to be more worthy of our listening and enjoyment than the music playing behind the television screen. The nonfictional artists that breathe the same air as you and I seem to be more worthy of our praise and streaming than the fictional singers from your favorite television show.

This baffles my mind because, as viewers, it's not like we consider all music from cinema to be irrelevant; we do take some music from the fictional world seriously. 'Shallow' from Bradley Cooper's A Star Is Born went on to win a Grammy. So, it's pretty evident that at least some music from movies and shows are capable of being praise-worthy.

I hear music from A Star Is Born all over the radio; people don't seem to have a problem with loving Bradley and Lady Gaga's music from this cinematic masterpiece. Why, then, are some people so quick to judge 'On A Roll'? It is because it's technically sung by a performer who seems like a cliché, childish pop singer?

Setting aside the fact that Ashley O only exists in the made-up world of a single Black Mirror episode, her music is actually catchy and fun to listen to. Plus, Miley is a real person, so it's not like the music is fake. If you see anyone jamming out to 'On A Roll', trust the millions of Spotify users who have streamed it and give it a chance.

In case you're unaware, "resting bitch face" is the term used to describe when a person's natural, expressionless face makes it look like they are mad at the world. Whether they are walking down the street or simply spacing out thinking about what to eat for dinner, it's very easy for others to assume that this person is either upset or mad at them. Because of this, those of us with Resting Bitch Face (RBF), and especially us women, have all experienced many of the same situations and conversations, including:

We've all had a crush before. Whether it leads to something or nothing, the process has all been the same. The awkward feelings, the stalking, and the stress of trying to keep this huge secret. The feeling of becoming a total spazz is something that cannot be avoided, and the most spazzy family that can relate to this feeling is the Belcher's.

At the tender age of 18, we are bestowed with the title of “adult.” For 17 years, we live under the rules and guidelines of our parents, school, and government, and to stray from any of those rules or guidelines marks us as a rebel. At 18, though, we must choose which college we want to go to or what career we want. We are allowed and encouraged to vote. We can buy lottery tickets and cigarettes. We can drop out of school, leave our household, and do other "adult" things. At 18, we start down a path of thinking for ourselves, when for the entirety of our lives other institutions have been mandated to think and do for us.

10 Thoughts Of A 5th Year Senior

What about those of us who don't do it all in four years?

"College will be the best four years of your life" is a phrase that we have all heard growing up. College is painted as a magical place to us while we are in high school. A place you go to learn, meet your best friends and probably have the time of your life while all of this is going down. Four whirlwind years, where everything that you've known changes and you start to learn what it means to live on your own, have a job, etc. But what about those of us who don't do this all in four years? Major changes, hard courses, switching schools, career paths changing, these are just a handful of factors that could extend your four years to five, six or seven. There is nothing wrong with taking extra time to graduate, but returning as a fifth-year is a little different. Most of your best friends have most likely graduated and moved and while you may be one of the oldest undergraduates on campus, you might feel as awkward as a freshmen. A world that became home and comfortable to you is still there but it's slightly different than you've known it to be and you have to find a groove to fall into. These are thoughts you'll have as you look ahead to returning to your college campus, with a victory lap planned.
