Just as I expected, Okeechobee Music Festival was officially the best three days of my existence—cue the post-festival depression. I had a wild weekend filled with beautiful people, yummy food, the best of friends, and, of course, amazing music.
As a first year festival, I was expecting a ton of complications to occur from lack of experience, but to my surprise, this festival went off without a hitch. It was obvious that everything was so meticulously and carefully planned, from the stages to the way they assigned camping spaces, down to the way the sun set behind the Ferris Wheel at night. I could go on about the aesthetics and logistics forever, but let's remember why I went in the first place—the music. A couple weeks ago, I wrote about what artists I was most excited for, so now here is my list of my favorite sets from Okeechobee.
9. Kendrick Lamar: To be quite honest most of the hip- hop artists that were at Okeechobee didn't really do it for me *cough Lil Dicky.* But Kendrick's vocals were on point; you can catch me front row at his next concert.
8. Kill the Noise: He killed the noise. I'm funny I know.
7. Manic Focus: After listening to this mix I found while jammin' out on my drive down to the festival I was stoked for his set. Needless to say it was everything I had hoped for and more.
6. Hermitude: Not sure if it was the way the sun was setting as they played on the beach, or if it was when they dropped "Speak of the Devil" that made this one of my favorite sets. Either way these two Australians absolutely slayed their set and the crowds response was nuts. I think they will definitely remember their first time in Florida.
5. Odesza: My most anticipated set was Odesza since I've never seen them before and they're one of my favorites. It was one of the last sets at the end of the festival, and their melodic tunes were a perfect way to end an unreal weekend. I will definitely be following them to the next festival.
4. Bassnectar: Bassheads unite. If you know me you know that Bassnectar is my all-time favorite DJ. He's less of a DJ and more of a musical genius if I'm being totally honest. I've seen plenty of his sets and they're all so different every time; it's truly incredible. I was sure he would play for more than the hour that he was allotted, but unfortunately he didn't. He sure as hell threw down in that hour though, and I enjoyed every second of it.
3. Big Gigantic: The best kind of music is the kind that doesn't fit into any kind of genre. Big Gigantic has proven to be the master of genre-bending with their absolutely INCREDIBLE set they gave us. Everyone was grooving to their funk- electro-jazz-hip-hop-and everything in between tunes.
2. Skrillex: To be quite honest I generally don't like Skrillex and don't listen to his music too often. That being said I absolutely love seeing him in person. The beats were dirty, the crowd was absolutely insane, and it was one of my favorite sets by a long shot. If you weren't there, I highly suggest you listen to it below. Warning: your face may melt.
1. Mumford and Sons: All. The. Tears. The emotion when Marcus Mumford sang gave me goosebumps the entire time. Not to mention he actually walked through the crowd during one of their songs which was totally surprising and incredibly cool. I actually was sobbing for probably half of this performance because it was just that good. Oh and did I mention they brought out Rage Against the Machines lead guitarist Tom Morello... and then he played the guitar with his teeth like freaking Jimi Hendrix!!! My angst-y teenage soul was so happy. They proceeded to jam out for the next hour and yea, it was probably the most epic moment of my life.
See you next year Okeechobeeings! Much love.
