It's astounding.
Time is fleeting.
Madness takes control.
But listen closely: the famed cult classic film "The Rocky Horror Picture Show" is getting an entirely new look, courtesy of Fox Entertainment.
Based on Richard O'Brien's stage musical, the film tells the story of two clean-cut sweethearts Brad Majors and Janet Weiss. Brad and Janet's car breaks down on a rainy night, and the only source of help they can find is the castle of alien Dr. Frank-N-Furter and his eccentric servants. Premiering on August 14, 1975, the film stars Susan Sarandon and Barry Bostwick as Brad and Janet, and Tim Curry as Frank-N-Furter. Over the years, the film has had a huge impact on culture, spawning live reenactments at midnight screenings and a condensed stage version performed at Universal Studios' annual Halloween Horror Nights. The film celebrated its 40th anniversary just last year, and has even made it into the National Film Registry as of 2005.
With generations upon generations of fans, Fox announced it would broadcast a live remake of the film set to premiere in late October this year. Kenny Ortega, known for directing and choreographing "High School Musical", is set to direct and choreograph the remake. "Orange Is The New Black" star Laverne Cox was cast in the role of Frank-N-Furter, and Nickelodeon star Victoria Justice was cast to play Janet. Broadway vets Annaleigh Ashford ("Kinky Boots" and "Sylvia" on Broadway) and Reeve Carney ("Penny Dreadful" and "Spider-Man: Turn Off the Dark" on Broadway) are set to play Columbia and Riff-Raff, respectively.
You'd think with such a star-studded cast and huge marketing, the reaction would be positive, right?
Not really.
In fact, most of the trailer's YouTube comments are negative. Most discuss the fact that Fox simply cannot remake such a classic, that no one can top the performances of the original cast. Others say that having a woman playing a role usually played by a man is what will make the television film flop. Some even say that the shoes of Janet Weiss being filled by Justice are the reason why the film will fail. A couple of users even complain that Hollywood has run out of ideas, so remakes seem to be their best bet at making money.
But not all of the comments are negative. Some fans are actually excited about what Fox has to offer for a new audience, arguing that the film began as O'Brien's stage musical and that it is simply a different interpretation of the musical itself. One user even writes that the entire film is about being tolerant. Those fans who are for the remake reason that the film hasn't been released yet and already there is so much hate.
I don't know about you guys, but I'm excited to see what Fox has to bring to the film. With more modern casting and a huge success with their "Grease Live!", why not give this one a chance? Don't dream it; wait till this October
