I will never forget the memories I have made with my freshman roommates this year. I lived in an apartment-style dorm with four bedrooms, so instead of one roommate I got the opportunity to have three. The ridiculous memories I have from knowing these three crazy girls are irreplaceable and some of the best I've ever had.
My first and one of my favorites was when one of them got a bug stuck in her ear while driving her scooter. Anne Marie and I still barely knew each other, though we had awkwardly gotten to know each other through Facebook messenger the entire spring prior. I had no idea who this poor girl was, and she was laying on our living room floor screaming at the top of her lungs because there was a fly legitimately stuck inside her ear. I have never laughed harder in my life or felt guiltier for taking pleasure in someone else's misery. Here I was, not even a week into school, pouring olive oil in a stranger's ear to make the bug come out. I knew at that moment it was going to be a crazy, ridiculous year with those three girls.
Another favorite memory of mine is our two hamsters. Anne Marie and Nashaly bought a hamster (without anyone else's permission, I might add) within the first month of school. Our new hamster, Lemmiwinks, escaped from his cage that same night and presumably disappeared. I repeat: we had this hamster for about three hours before it got out of its cage. I don't think I even got to hold the thing. We left out food and did whatever else we could think of to find him. A week went by and we figured he was gone for good. All was well until our RA came in to tell us animal control was going to have to come if we couldn't find him. That meant multiple random men were going to be in our apartment for at least two days, ripping out all of our appliances to look for Lemmiwinks. I was not going to fly with this, so we bought a new hamster and pretended that we had found our old one. That seemed like a fantastic idea until we discovered that the old one had been hiding behind our stove the entire time.
Lemmiwinks #1 hid under that stove for two weeks. LSU game day came around and he decided to surrender. My roommate Sydney and I chased him around the living room for ten minutes, and when we finally caught the poor thing he was so traumatized he never let us touch him again. Needless to say, we gave away Lemmiwinks #1 and held onto Lemmiwinks #2 until he died out of nowhere over winter break. We never got another pet after that.
Soon after that, three of us went on a fraternity's road trip where we didn't know a soul and had the best time. We ran through University of Alabama's campus without knowing anyone around us, snuck into their football stadium before getting caught and kicked out two seconds later, and even saw a guy or two willingly let someone stick them with a Taser. I wouldn't have wanted to spend a ridiculous weekend like that with anybody else.
These are just a few highlights of my experiences with Anne Marie, Nashaly and Sydney. Although these memories stand out the most, I will never forget the little things either. Roommate dinners on Friday nights, sitting in the living room talking for hours, fighting over who should do the dishes or clean the hamster's cage: these are the things I will miss the most about these three people. They are not just my roommates, but some of my closest friends. They have seen me at my best and happiest, but also at my absolute lowest and most miserable points. We have consoled and held each other through homesick-ness, boy troubles, family issues and even the deaths of people we know. These girls are some of the best and realest I have ever met, and I will never forget that they came into my life at such an amazing time. To Sydney, Anne Marie and Nashaly: I love you all so much and thanks for all the memories we have together!
