One of my favorite parts of college is living with my roommates, who are nursing majors. The two of them (and our best friend who we consider an honorary roommate) are always talking about their classes, clubs, and experiences that revolve around being apart of the nursing school. As a liberal arts student, I can't really relate all the time, but I love hearing about what they are learning. Nursing majors really are the best people to live with, and these are 10 reasons why.
1. Our room is always clean.
One of my roommates is vacuuming as I type this. I have never really been a tidy person before coming to college, but after living with my two future nurses for a month, I have never felt cleaner. We have a huge container of Clorox wipes and a vacuum stashed in the closet, and when rumor has it the stomach flu is going around, the Lysol disinfectant spray gets put to good use. I can't wait to see what happens when they start their infection control unit!
2. I always have study buddies.
Have you seen that Intro to Nursing textbook? It's HEFTY. My roomies are always studying, which helps motivate me to get in the groove when I would rather binge watch Grey's.
3. Cheap ear piercings...?
Well...this one may NOT be highly encouraged, but there is no one I (or my roommate in this case) would trust with being more sanitary when it comes to DIY piercings.
4. They are the first to jump at the opportunity to help out.
From needing a band-aid to helping someone in the bathroom who had a rough night, they've got it covered.
5. Our dorm room is practically a walk-in clinic.
Caught a cold? Get a papercut? Say the word and the meds appear. While everyone should come to college prepared with the first aid basics, nursing majors seem to have all the necessities and then some.
6. Forget WebMD, I have my roommates.
When I say "I have a headache", it goes from a whiny complaint to a chance for them to practice patient care.
7. I'll never forget to get a flu shot.
8. They always want to talk.
This is a good thing since nurses have to be sociable people. Whenever I'm feeling down, need to chat, or have a laugh I can always turn to my roommates. They always want to talk to me, even if they have to study.
9. I've become more conscious of my eating habits.
Nurses especially know what's up when it comes to good eating habits and exercise, but taking a nutrition class doesn't mean we don't have one (or two, or three) pints of Ben & Jerry's in our freezer at all times.
10. They are passionate about their career path from day one.
As freshmen in college, it is so cool that they already have a solid career path ahead of them. They love what they are studying, and it is so fun watching them be excited about getting their first stethoscope and aneroid sphygmomanometer, the arm cuff that measures your blood pressure (for those of us not on a medical career path). I hope to be as passionate about whatever major I end up choosing as they are about becoming nurses. Anyone would be in good hands with these three around!
Special thanks to my two roommates (and honorary roomie) for letting me feature them in my work. I love you guys!
