As I lay in bed sick from the next stomach bug that has circled its way around to my body, I think of how lucky I am to have a mom who is a nurse, until she comes in my room to hound me for not drinking enough fluids and tells me that "just because I am sick doesn't mean my room can be a mess." Then, I do not feel so lucky anymore. All moms have this innate ability to go into nursing mode when a child is sick, but having a mom who holds a nursing position and goes into mom mode is a whole separate level of nursing. Nursing moms can be the best thing and also the worst.

1. Nothing Fools Them

Having a nurse as a mom means that nothing gets by them. Trying to stay home from school sick is unheard of! If you are not running an actual fever, and by that I mean definitely over 100.0 none of that 99.5 stuff, look on the verge of death, and physically incapable of moving, then you are going to school. There is not such thing as "pretending" to be sick, because nurses know all the signs of a faker. So go ahead and wake up and get ready for a long day, because you are not fooling them!

2. There Better Be Blood

I remember yelling for my mom when I would fall and scrape my knee and her yelling back, "There better be blood or I am going to be mad!" To be fair I would scream bloody murder no matter the situation, a tiny scrape or a bone sticking out, so I can understand why my mom would say such a thing. However, working in a hospital, it seems my mom is not the only one who agrees that when it comes to yelling for mom, there better be blood!

3. Take Some Ibuprofen

The famous words of my mother whenever I would fall, have a broken foot, headache, etc were always, "Suck it up and take some Ibuprofen!" Nurse moms are not quick to whisk you away to the nearest emergency room or sign you up for a doctors appointment. First things first is the OTC (over the counter) medicines. I suppose it is a good thing nurse moms do not always rush you to an emergency room just because you have a stubbed toe. Even though their child is ill, nurse moms still put logic first and try to work out what needs to be done before seeking further advice.

4. Nurse Moms are the Best

When all is said and done, nurse moms are the best. They mock your boo boos, tell you to suck it up, and brush off your injury, but at the end of the day they are the ones you want by your side. Nurse moms come with an extra stash of caring for the ill, so on those days when you are stuck at home in bed, it is nurse mom to the rescue even if it is just to rub your head while you go back to sleep. They remain calm when you break bones and make sure you know everything will be alright. They will look at all those weird bumps you find on your body, or clean up your bloody knee, they will stand by you will you become best friends with a toilet, will hold a wet cloth to your head as you sleep. Nurse moms are the best of both worlds, because you not only have your own personal nurse, but you have your mom right by your side too. You better have a good reason to be needing her though, or they will be mad!

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
