It’s getting close to election time in this great country of ours, which naturally means that Facebook is full of political geniuses who believe they could fix every issue in our country overnight. I get it, everyone is entitled to his or her own opinion, and Freedom of Speech allows you to voice that opinion openly, and freely. However, that does not mean you need to do so through putting other people and their own personal opinions down.
Where has the respect gone? How have so many of us lost sight of the fact that we can choose to believe different things without ripping each other’s throats out behind keyboards? It blows my mind to scroll through my Facebook feed and see how people can publicly attempt to ridicule, insult, and dumb down others just in an attempt to push one candidate over the next. I truly feel embarrassed when I read the posts with twenty plus comments of people going back and forth bashing not just Donald Trump, Hilary Clinton, and Barack Obama, but bashing each other as individuals. When did disagreeing with someone automatically make you smarter than him or her? And more importantly, when did disagreeing with what the person currently in office has done automatically qualify you to run the country more efficiently, productively, and in a much safer, secure manner? Newsflash; it doesn’t.
I am all for sharing what you believe with others, that is one of the key reasons behind Facebook’s existence. However, when your opinions and beliefs lead you to not only insult another individual but provide you with feelings of superiority, well that’s when you should do us all a favor and delete your account. If you want to calmly and respectfully describe in detail why you are voting for Donald Trump or Hilary Clinton. Go for it! If instead you are using your social media account to make comments or posts criticizing the intelligence of those casting their vote for the opposite candidate, the only person you’re embarrassing is yourself.
Mature voters realize that negative Facebook posts and/or comments are not what win an election. Hate to break it to you all out there, but you insulting my intelligence and commenting all the reasons why Trump will “Make America Great Again” will not get him my vote! I’m sure that also goes for those of you who support him. Hilary will not become your choice because someone got into an argument with you at 2 A.M on a Facebook status.
So, if you want to support your presidential candidate, do so in a positive way. Go to a rally or donate to their campaign. Do not spend your time online arguing with and bashing those who believe differently than you, because I can promise you two things; you are not changing their mind, and you are humiliating yourself with every push of a button.
