A Note To #BlackLivesMatter Advocates

I personally believe that Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is possibly the greatest activist of all time when it comes to social issues. His message of nonviolent progression spoke to so many African Americans and white American citizens, alike. He refused to stoop to the level of the white supremacists, which made him more respectable, and it did not hinder him or his message in any other way. So when dealing with social issues today, I often find myself comparing the modern activists to the teachings of Dr. King, which I think is a fair benchmark.

When the Black Lives Matter movement first began in 2013, I was a supporter and I continued to support them until this year during the Dallas shootings. I became aware of BLM protesters chanting things like “pigs in a blanket, fry ‘em like bacon” and “kill all cops” and I found that it had a chilling resemblance to the KKK. I no longer support the Black Lives Matter movement because the group has gone from peaceful protest to hate group in a time span of three years.

I understand that comparing BLM to the KKK will be seen as a stretch to many regressive Democrats but the truth is they are often blinded by their own agenda to see what is right in front of them. Following the Dallas shooting (in which the gunmen were BLM supporters) the question that started to be asked was “is BLM a terrorist group?” and that question still begs to be asked today following the Milwaukee, Wisconsin riots. I even find myself today wanting to hold back and not yet label them as a terrorist group because I think that there are many Black Lives Matter supporters who condemn such acts of senseless violence. However, my answer is yes. The definition of terrorism is “an act of violence done for political or religious gain”. Therefore any protest that is not peaceful can be labeled as terrorism, and the violence done by BLM is for political gain; therefore, it is terrorism. If ISIS were doing this people wouldn’t hesitate to call it what it is. (Although, now that I think of it, I’m sure many regressive Democrats would deny it.)

In Milwaukee, Wisconsin, BLM activists set houses on fire, beat up random white people, and destroyed their community. Why? Because a black guy got shot. Yes, it is terrible that some random black guy got shot, but the question is, was he innocent? No. He had a loaded gun and was threatening to shoot the police officer. That is a life-threatening situation and many BLM supporters (or any sane person, for that matter) would have done the exact same thing if they were in a similar position.

At the end of the day, what is Black Lives Matter? It is a vengeance group set out to get revenge for their ancestors who were sold into slavery. The problem with that is that none of those racists who owned slaves are still living. So what do they do? They lash out at innocent white people who had nothing to do with their own ancestor’s hideous act. They are so hate-filled and are, honestly, no better than the Black Panthers, the KKK, or ISIS, for that matter. To be clear, there are good people in the BLM movement just as there are good Muslims. However, the bad seeds are representing the movement right now because BLM refuse to kick them out and make it clear that they are a peaceful organization. If anybody in BLM truly believes in the teachings of MLK but still advocate for this violence, they are hypocrites. Violence will not stop racism. All violence does is turn your allies against you and make your enemies hate you even more. Violence will not decrease racism, it will only increase it.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
