You Don't Always Have To Make Yourself Happy

We are not designed to be happy all the time. At the end of the day, or even the week, obtaining happiness can be so much work

I believe that no one can find a permanent way of being happy. Before being called a narcissist, I would like to say that I am only trying to be realistic. As someone who has taken several courses in anthropology and psychology, I have come to learn in an objective viewpoint on how emotions operate.

People can have a sense of being satisfied with their life or feeling as though they have sense of purpose. I a young and still have a lot of work to do to reach that state of satisfaction and having a sense of purpose. When I live through my day to day life, I do not always feel happy. Instead, I feel thankful for the life that i have been given.

I am a hard worker; I like to work towards something then get rewarded afterwards. I am the most relieved and relaxed on a Friday. Then, the weekend rolls by and it's over in a blink of an eye. When I sit at a desk, reading articles of psychopathology, I wonder if I really did feel happy in those brief moments of time on the weekend.

Happiness can be so fleeting. I believe that people get stuck with the idea that they always need to be happy in order to feel satisfied with their life or have a sense of purpose. This is not the way to go, and we were not designed to always be happy. For example, if I win the million dollar lottery, I will be enthusiastically ecstatic. A month will roll by and i will be content will all the quality products I have and the new place I got. When a year goes by, I will not be as enthusiastically ecstatic or happy like the time I won the lottery. I would become insanely bored and lose sight of what i would need to accomplish next in my life.

The recipe to being happy involves a strive for something more in life. Reaching one's goals, enjoying the little things, and not taking life so seriously helps in reaching the state of being content with oneself. And, of course, not pushing oneself too hard to get where they think they want to be. i am guilty of thinking too harshly of myself. Honestly, i have never gotten anywhere with that mindset. Only disappointment. I take my time to enjoy the little things, not take things personally, and make time to relax. Life is too short to always worry and work hard to be simply happy.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
