According to Greek mythology, the first human beings were born with four arms, four legs and four eyes. They had two noses and two mouths. Zeus was absolutely terrified of them taking his place as ruler. As a preventative measure Zeus split these human beings in half. He believed that by doing this he would prevent them from overthrowing him. Instead of looking to take his power they would spend eternity searching the world for their other half. This story creates the birth of soulmates.
Popular belief is that you have one soulmate, which when you base it off of the myth makes a good amount of sense. Popular opinion would also have you believe that your soulmate is a romantic partner who you are supposed to find, marry, and love forever. I don’t believe in soulmates in a traditional sense of the word. I believe that your soulmate is someone who comes into your life at a specific time and they never leave. You meet this person, or people, and you form a bond. This bond is unbreakable. It stands the test of time, hardships, loss, distance and more.
When you love someone you can’t imagine your life without them. My girlfriends and I always use the term, forever friends. Your forever friend is someone who came into your life and now you can’t imagine your life without them. You envision them at your wedding, baby shower, having play dates with your kids, in the nursing home years down the road, and even at your funeral, because forever doesn’t end.
A forever friend is a variation of a soulmate. They come into your life when you need them and then they never leave. They’re the type of people who stick by you when you make a mistake. As you sit on the floor crying because of the effects of your mistake they hold your hand and tell you it’s going to be okay. They don’t condone your actions but they support you in your journey to improve yourself and not make similar mistakes again. That’s why these people are your forever friends. They love you unconditionally and when there are no conditions to a person’s love then there is no reason for them to leave.
You have a connection. Your relationship has a purpose. This person has come into your life because they have something to offer you. They’re there to stay. One of my best friends was born just a few months after me. Our moms have been best friends since before we were born. I consider Thomas to be one of my soulmates. No matter how far apart we are. No matter how long we go between talking we are always there for each other. Cradle to grave, baby diapers to adult diapers. Other than my family, he’s the one person who has come into my life and never left me no matter what.
I have friends now that I see as people who will never leave. You never know who’s going to be there through everything until your relationship is tested. But these people are in your life for a reason and you should treasure them. Your soulmates are people who have touched your soul in such a way that your world doesn’t spin without them anymore. They’re a lover, a partner, a friend, a part of you...a soulmate.
