You no longer have to be emo, goth or punk to be allowed to have rainbow-colored hair. In the arena of fashion, you don’t have to be making a statement with your hair color. It used to be a sign of rebellion or even the mark of an outcast, but no longer! It started with the stars and has now reached us Meer mortals. Thanks to Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, the Kardashian clan and Demi Lovato we can wear crazy colors with pride. Do I dare to claim that the classy girls have now claimed the color duo?
I at least claim this in regards to my own hair. “Your hair is purple?! IT'S PURPLE!”, yes, this fact has not escaped me. Hearing this (exact) statement from my family all summer (they think they are so funny) would have reminded me, that is if I had managed to forget that little detail and my mirror was somehow malfunctioning.
I am not making a statement with my hair and no I did not fall into paint (thanks Jonathan). I love having purple hair! It's fun and unique, there is nothing wrong with that. Yes, I do stand out in a crowd, but if you wear it with pride people will love it as much as you do. Now it does take a brave person to do this.
Then you need to prepare yourself for the fading, bleeding, the cost of products and shedding that comes with the territory. Also be prepared for the family jokes… There will be many. Another thing you need to consider is if your job will allow it. Probably one of the best times to do this is when you are in college and don’t have a picky job. Because honestly, no one cares what color your hair is in college. Yes it will have a bit of a shock factor, but after the initial shock wears off, nobody cares.
So it if you are really considering it, wait a month or two to think it over and look at different styles. At the end of those two months, if you still want to do it, start looking for a professional to do it for you. The best way to find a good hairdresser is through personal recommendation. Believe me! You want someone that knows what they are doing to work on your hair.
The first coloring has to be done by a professional, but after that, you can do it yourself. It takes some practice, but it is a lot cheaper and for goodness sakes! The box color stays in as long if not longer than the salon stuff. So there you go, you decide for yourself. Is colored hair still a society no no, or something worth trying. Oh and just to let you know, if you have to bleach your hair (like little old brunette me) your hair will be irrevocably damaged. So you will have to grow it out or look into getting a pixie cut. Have fun!
