Coach Ben McAdoo and General Manager Jerry Reese of the New York Giants were dismissed from the team on December 4 and some people think that this was a surprising move. Normally, the Giants are not the team that will fire their head coach in the middle of the season, and they will usually wait until the season is over to make a coaching change. However, in this particular situation, I think that the dismissal of Coach McAdoo should have come sooner rather than later. It was clear that he had lost all of his control over his players, and the season was essentially over, with no chance of making the playoffs. The team looked dysfunctional, undisciplined, and just simply unorganized whenever they took the field, and something needed to happen so that this team would not lose all of its morale.
I am sure that Giants fans were wondering all season when the firing would happen, and once McAdoo decided to bench the 2-time Super Bowl winning quarterback and star of the franchise, Eli Manning, this was clearly the last straw. Not only was Manning benched, which ended his streak of starting 210 games consecutively, he was benched for Geno Smith. I have nothing against Geno Smith, and I feel sorry for him for being put in the middle of this situation, but if you decide to bench Eli Manning, then you should play the quarterback that could potentially be his replacement for the future, you should not start a quarterback that is not the long-term solution for the organization. For anyone that argues that Geno Smith could be the quarterback solution for the Giants, I am not even going to waste my time addressing this. Davis Webb should have been the starter, that way the Giants could see if he is Eli Manning’s future replacement or not.
Now I want to address the firing of Jerry Reese. This also took too long, but I am happy that it finally happened. Reese has continually failed to address the needs of this organization and I personally blame him for Eli Manning’s subpar play these last few seasons. Eli Manning time and time again takes so many hits each season because of a terrible offensive line, it is hard for me to watch. Manning has not had a consistent running game for the last 4-5 years, he’s had to rely on offensive linemen like Ereck Flowers to protect him (and we all know how that is going), and he is not getting any younger. These hits are taking a toll on his body, and the Giants are essentially wasting Manning’s last few years. Despite what everyone says, I will never understand why Reese thought that Manning needed Brandon Marshall and not another offensive lineman, and I still do not understand why he decided to draft Eli Apple. I personally do not think that Eli Apple has lived up to expectations, and I would much rather prefer that we try to trade him for a different piece because I am sure that he will receive offers, but this to me is just another example of Reese’s failure as a general manager.
I am ecstatic that the Giants finally made this decision to cut ties with McAdoo and Reese, and now I finally think that the future for this team looks bright once again. I only ask one thing of the Giants owners John Mara and Steve Tisch: please do not put me through this ever again. Sign a great head coach, bring in a responsible general manager, and please make the New York Giants great again!
