Even though Valentine's Day is still a few weeks away, my roommate and I thought we should go ahead and start planning. We do not have Valentines, however, we have big plans. Those plans include eating ice cream, watching every Nicholas Sparks movie that we can, and crying (a lot).
Upon making these plans, we started thinking about how all these movies have the same basic layout. They are kind of like Hallmark movies, but a lot better, and sadder. So here is a list of 10 essential elements that go into making a Nicholas Sparks movie.
1. The classic making-out-in-the-rain scene
Apparently, this happens a lot.
2. Someone dies
This is to remind you (in case you forgot) that there are no 'happily ever after's. This is also the part of the movie where you should be crying if you haven't yet.
3. A falling out/big fight
[SPOILER ALERT]
They end up reconciling
4. Countless love letters
(okay, so maybe he counted, but you get my point)
5. Flashbacks
This is my favorite aspect of these movies. It really keeps things interesting.
The best is when nearly the entire movie is a flashback.
6. Someone goes to war
This really adds another layer of sadness and tragedy.
7. Something is keeping them from being together
Like a war
Or another person
Do not worry, because their love is too strong for them to be kept apart.
8. Frolicking through the water
...or making out in the water...
Basically, water is romantic and essential, especially when it's falling from the sky (see No.1 again for proof).
9. Crying
...lots of crying...
10. And, of course, passionate, unbreakable love
If you, too, would like to have a Nicholas Sparks marathon this Valentines Day, here is a complete list of his beautiful movies:
