As December rolls around, so do goals and aspirations for the new year. It's the same thing every January, you tell yourself you'll change, you'll start going to the gym everyday, eating healthy, making more spontaneous decisions, organizing yourself better. The first few weeks, maybe months, are easy. But when your near February, or March, you go back to your old ways. "I'll try again next year," you say.
If it's not like this, the scenario begins in November, you realize you've gained that college weight, or that you're turning into a worrywart, sticking to a routine. You promise yourself, "come January, I'll change. New year, new me". You buy a calendar, some work out clothes to motivate you, savor those last Holiday cookies and treats, and plan the Spring Break of your dreams to reward yourself.
But why wait until January? Why are we always putting off our changes and improvements? Why start the gym in January when you can start tomorrow? Why envision your New Year's Day salad when you can order one today? Why are we so scared to change and better ourselves that we need to give ourselves an official starting point and deadline?
Maybe it's because I've measured my life in school years, but I've never understood the hype around New Year's Eve and the whole celebration. To me, it is just a party, the celebration of a new number to put on our papers. The New Year shouldn't be an excuse to change, if you feel something is wrong, change now.
Don't put it off, start now!
Self improvement is important, it is never too late, or too early, to better yourself. Your health should always be a priority, if its a problem for you, don't put it off.
Enjoy the holidays, of course, but don't treat them as one last binge. Treat December as the new January, the beginning of the "new you".
Be spontaneous now. Don't plan your spontaneity; it kind of defeats the purpose.
Take a yoga class tomorrow, don't wait until the first week of January when the gym is full, and you can't find a free spot in the class.
Buy an academic calendar on sale and organize your life now. Color code your classes, do your homework, make a schedule. Don't wait until the day of to do everything at once.
There's no need to wait until a certain day to make the changes you've been wanting to make for so long. There's also no need to give up after one bad day. Change has no deadlines, no requirements. January 1st is not "Official New You Day". Everyday is "Official New You Day" because everyday is a new chance to be a better you.
