The obesity epidemic plagues the United States, but it seems to have avoided New York City. Maybe the name "the big apple" scared away this sweeping prevalence of obesity and proved that the city was impenetrable. Although obesity is still a problem in New York City (close to 25%), is appears as though most people are in great shape. Why is that?
In the city, where it's notoriously difficult to own a car, New Yorkers walk everywhere. Oh my quads, I was sore and run down after a couple of days here because of the amount of walking. Here's my Fitbit from one day out and about in the city.
New Yorkers also know that the best way to escape the harsh sounds and smells of the city is to take a stroll through Central Park or Bryant Park, thus accumulating more steps for the day.
Good is never good enough for New Yorkers. They are driven on all levels and take their gym time very seriously. A fitness craze has taken over. In a city that's a hub for industries that attract beautiful people, there's a bias for beauty that motivates you to look your best. New Yorkers spend an average of $134.50 a month on a gym membership, ranking the city third in the nation. Additionally, the majority of people I see at the swanky Equinox gym have a personal trainer every day, racking up that gym bill significantly. People are serious about pumping it and aren't afraid to shell out the money.
In a city where cupcake shops are as rampant as the subway rats, and bottomless mimosas are synonymous with Sunday brunches, it can be quite a shock that New Yorkers are so in shape.
