Every year people always get caught up with the idea of New Year's resolutions. Some of the resolutions are harder to keep than others. It's all based on how much you want it, but after the first few weeks, you realize just how hard it really is. Here is a list of the popular resolutions everyone has tried at least once and a list of some people don't always think about.
The popular resolutions:
1. Lose weight.
Everyone wants to slim down a little, but it's not as easy as it seems. I think people like the idea of losing weight instead of the actual working out.
2. Be healthier.
This is one of the most clichéd new year's resolutions. Everyone wants to be healthier. The healthier you are, the happier you are. We all like the idea of being fitter and eating better, but it's harder to complete than we assume.
3. Stop a bad habit.
People who smoke or drink like to have this as their resolution because it makes for better living. Most people try but realize it's too hard once you have become addicted and dependent on something. It's not as easy to change your ways, but studies show that if you drop a habit and stop that habit for a month, you will be able to fully stop it.
4. Be more positive.
I like to think that I'm always positive. But sometimes, life gets in the way and things are harder than you would think. When bad things happen, people begin to lose the positivity and become negative. Negativity leads to unhappiness. Everyone wants to be happy, so they come up with this resolution and try to find at least one thing in a day to be happy.
5. Become more organized.
My thinking on this is: if you aren't organized now, you won't ever be organized. Organization is not something that can be changed easily. In fact, I don't really think it can be changed at all unless it's worked for years. While everyone wants to be organized, you just have to come up with your idea of organized.
6. Help others.
Helping others gives everyone satisfaction. You feel better about yourself, and it makes life a lot easier knowing you have done something good. Once you get a taste of the satisfaction, you want it to be there all the time. Feeling good about something you have done leads to the happiness everyone wants and desires. I love this resolution a whole lot.
And then there are the resolutions everyone should consider trying:
1. Learn a new language.
Wouldn't it be so cool to be bilingual? I think it would be so helpful, especially as America becomes more and more diverse. You can do so much more when you know multiple languages.
2. Overcome a fear.
Everyone is afraid of something. But is it really all that hard to conquer fears? If you are scared of heights, consider breaking out of your shell and going cliff diving. If you have a fear of needles, maybe go get a piercing or tattoo. Expose yourself to the fear, and you can control your fears.
3. Stop worrying about things.
I've noticed that people worry about the "what ifs" or the possible outcomes of making a decision. This leads to people being uptight and never wanting to venture out. I say everyone should try to live in the moment. If bad things come, you learn from them and don't do it again. Nothing bad can come from living in the moment, and it makes people more open to new experiences and learning from their mistakes.
4. Be more punctual.
This is something I especially need to work on. My friends often refer to me as "Running late Rapella" because even if my life depended on it, I can never be on time. If you are like me on this, it should be a "for sure" on your list of resolutions.
5. Visit somewhere you’ve always wanted to go.
It may cost money, but sometimes everyone needs to be pampered. It helps to kick back and relax especially when you have impending finals coming, starting a new year, work overload, whatever it may be, life gets beyond stressful. If you have time, you should go somewhere you've always wanted to go. After all, you are only young once.
6. Improve money skills.
Every college kid really needs to consider this one because we are already broke as is. When I first started college, I would buy things that I didn't need all the time, and now, I wish I had been smarter about what I spent my money on.
