New Year, New You!

The New Year is still fresh and the resolutions are still going strong … for the most part. By this point in time, some seem to be falling off the bandwagon. However, not everyone is ready to give up quite yet and spring break is quickly approaching. Not to worry! There is still plenty of time to get in shape and break unhealthy habits before you have to shed a few layers of clothes to put on that bathing suit. Here are some small changes you can make in your daily routine to jump-start the new, healthier you:

1. If you have the option to take the elevator or the stairs, take the stairs! It’s better for you to keep moving and you won’t feel as lazy at the end of the day.

2. When you have the choice to walk to class or ride the bus, choose the walk if your class isn’t too far away. It’s always nice to take a walk in the fresh air on a weekday morning, even if you are going to your least favorite class all the way across campus.

3. Drink. Water. I know it gets boring, it gets old, you don’t like it, it’s too plain. Throw a Crystal Light Peach Mango Green Tea packet in your water and carry on with your day. Water keeps you hydrated, keeps you full, and keeps you energized.

4. If you are anything like me and you love coffee, but have already reached your third cup of the day, make some green tea. Or eat an apple! Both are healthier sources of caffeine and they contain less sugar than all the cream and sweetener you would consume if you put them in your coffee.

5. Not thrilled with on-campus meal options? Pack a lunch! You can always grab a yogurt and some fruit from the fridge on your way out the door.

6. Keep a food journal. Knowing you have to write down everything you eat affects the choices you make during the day.

7. Do you like to workout, but not by yourself? Find a workout buddy! Look for someone who will go for a jog with you; you can even hold each other accountable for daily workouts.

8. Check your campus recreational center for any fitness classes they may offer. Fitness classes are fun, easy ways to get a good workout in! And if you’re worried about looking clueless in a class, don’t be because chances are there are other new people in there too.

9. Make a motivational workout playlist. Mix some upbeat tunes with some classic throwbacks and you’re ready to go!

10. Sleep. This is a hard for almost all college students, myself included. Not only will you feel more rested after a good night of sleep, it also helps increase your metabolism and aid in weight loss. This proves that sometimes it is beneficial to embrace the grandma lifestyle.

These are all simple, easy steps you can take toward living a healthier life. Why not start today? Take a break from Netflix, grab some tennis shoes, and take a walk outside. The only thing holding you back is you!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
