If you’re in college, chance are you love Netflix. It’s one of our favorite form of procrastination. There’s so many shows and movies to chose from. From classics like Grey’s Anatomy and One Tree Hill, you can spend many hours not doing your homework on Netflix. However, Netflix has some great original shows as well. In 2016, there are a lot of new releases and some new seasons of old favorites. Here are the top new shows from Netflix you should be ready to watch this year.
1. "Love"
This is a new created by Judd Apatow and Paul Rust and stars Gillian Jacobs as well as Rust. Netflix has ordered two seasons, with the first to premiere on Feb. 19. It’s a comedy show that hopes to be a down to earth look at dating, and will explore male and female perspectives on romantic relationships. If you’re a fan of romantic comedies or Judd Apatow’s work, then this show will be a great binge.
2. "Fuller House"
You have probably heard by now that "Full House" is coming back. If you were a fan of the original, you’re most likely excited for this reboot. Nostalgia is high for this show, so hopefully this sequel can live up to the original. Nevertheless, you should watch out for February 26th as that’s when all 13 episodes air on Netflix.
3. "Marvel’s Luke Cage"
Marvel has been doing pretty well on Netflix, with both Daredevil and Jessica Jones doing well and being well received by audiences and critics. Luke Cage was a supporting character in a few episodes of Jessica Jones, but the show will focus on Luke and his journey. After a sabotaged experiment gives Luke unbreakable skin and super strength, Luke Cage tries to rebuild his life in Harlem. If you’re a fan of Marvel, or you liked either series on Netflix, this is a show to look out for.
4. "The Get Down"
This show will be a musical drama series It’s co-created by Shawn Ryan and Baz Luhrmann (co-writer of "Moulin Rouge" and "The Great Gatsby"). Little is know about this show, but the co-writers are fantastic. The show is set in New York in the 1970s, and will explore the social environment during this time.
5. "Flaked"
Will Arnett has worked with Netflix before with Arrested Development and BoJack Horseman. If you like either of those shows, this is one to look out for. Arnett has this show coming out this year as well. This will be a comedy about a self-help guru that struggles to keep out of trouble with his lies. Expect this to be hilarious.
6. "The Ranch"
Any "That 70s Show" fans out there? Ashton Kutcher and Danny Masterson are staring in a comedy TV show together again. They’ll be playing brothers who live on a ranch in Colorado and it’ll be about them trying to keep the business alive. There are going to be two batches of 10 episodes this year, which is different programming than Netflix normally does, so it’ll be interesting to see how this release schedule compares to the traditional batch each year that Netflix has traditionally done.
7. "Stranger Things"
This will be a supernatural drama set in New York. A boy mysteriously vanishes without a trace. Other than that, not much in the know about the show, but it does star Winona Ryder. If you liked Wayward Pines, the same producers are working on this show.
8. "Marseille"
Narcos was a Netflix original that was primarily filmed in Spanish. Netflix doesn’t plan to limit itself in English and plans to do that with this series, except in French. This will be a political drama about the mayor of Marseille. He has to deal with drug lords, labor unions, and corruption. It’s written and directed by some of the best in France and will be produced entirely in France. It will debut in March. If you loved Narcos or enjoy political dramas, check this show out.
Keep a look out for those new shows! Of course, many of the favorite titles are coming back, "House of Cards," "Orange is the New Black," "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" and more, but these new shows have promise and will expand Netflix’s production. Whether you love drama, comedy, or just want to see some familiar faces from your childhood, you’ll be able to find the next show you watch for an entire weekend when you should have been studying for a midterm.
