Since I can remember, at the start of a new year I have always heard people saying, "New Year New Me." I always understood this as part of their New Years Resolution. For example, they're about to start a new gym membership, begin to eat healthier, quit smoking things of that nature.
However, now that I'm older I've started to realize people are starting to take this quote more literally. They use the new year to change themselves completely by acting differently, wearing different clothes, eating foods they know they hate. My question is then, are you really you anymore?
Why change something that's already great? I understand making a healthier you, but why make a new you? In today's society, social media plays such a big role in our every day lives. People see what stars are wearing, eating, and doing and then think it's what they should be doing too.
I say just do whatever the hell you want! Why do you need guidance from anyone else? People love you for wearing your polka dot leggings or cat t-shirts because that quirky mark is your mark. Just because one of the Kardashian's isn't wearing them doesn't mean you need to stop?
Some are even trying to follow the diets of models, but honestly that's pretty unrealistic for most of us. I mean does Bella Hadid really not have a donut from time to time? So if you want that late night milkshake, go for it. If you want to try that new hot yoga class, go for it. If you want to start a new job, go for it.
Just make sure it's something you're doing for yourself and not because someone else is or wants you to. Like your mom used to say when you were a kid, "If she jumped off a bridge, would you jump too?"
Overall, 2017 should be the year of YOU. Do the things you've dreamed about but have been too reserved to try. Do the things that make you happy and stop the things that don't. Forgot the old traditional list of resolutions to check off on your desk, rather make them up as you go so you don't feel tied down.
This year, don't lose yourself in these ridiculous weight loss remedies and crazy exercise programs, just do what you feel comfortable with and go at your own pace. You are perfect in your own unique way and the world would not be the same without your own special addition to it. Make this year about you.
In 2017, you don't have to make a new you, just make a happier you.
