New Futuristic Technology That Actually Exists Now

From color-changing robot skin from MIT to solar panel roof shingles courtesy of Tesla, the future is now.

Every week I like to look through the scientific communities chatterboxes to get the first scoop on brand new technology that will become accessible. This month has quite a few new achievements that are nearing completion. The most notable being the creation and testing of a train in Germany powered completely from hydrogen and oxygen. The train itself gathers nearby air as it travels, turning oxygen and hydrogen into electricity that powers the train along. allowing it reach speeds near 87 miles per hour. That speed is quite important since most trains in the United States average that same speed but waste tons of non-renewable resources to operate. Excess energy that is gathered is stored in lithium batteries underneath the train for later use. With the huge effect coal and oil are having on the environment the necessity for renewable resources are absolute must right now. Considering the United States use train tracks for 40 percent of its freighting operations according to the Federal Railroad Administration (FRA). America uses it railroad system more than any other type of travel for goods, implementing naturally powered trains could greatly save our environment while generating new jobs for the transition process.

Some scientific accomplishments are less notable but can also be hard to leave out. For example the male fertility app and testing box. That's right, scientist at Harvard university have created a fertility test for men that can be used at home and processed through your smartphone. While some people may find this funny — like myself — it is worth noting that 45 million couples are experiencing fertility issues and forty percent of those cases are due to male infertility. Another Example would be the color-changing robot skin developed by MIT. While I was not able to think of any practical uses for this new technology I am sure it can be used for arts and media, I imagine mostly in the movie making industry for special scenes and effects.

OK, but all jokes aside, theirs is another big development in technology now available commercially through Tesla. Starting in April Tesla will begin taking orders for solar panel roof tiles including installation. While the exact cost in unclear the idea seems brilliant why shouldn't your roof provide you free power. Would you rather have basic shingles that just shield you from weather or would like to have a roof of shingles that not only keeps you dry but also powers your TV. Not to mention and similar the German's hydrogen train, this could really start fighting climate change.

We here in the United States and across the world need to change our power sources over to technology with infinite energy rather than burn through our planets natural resources while destroying it at the same time. If we do not in a few years after causing permanent damage due to the release of fossil fuels our planet may be doomed, not to sound too dramatic but that could be easily avoided. Think about it this way. You may or may not believe in global warming, climate change or anything similar. Now realize we only got ONE planet and we will know the outcome eventually one way or the other. Do you wish to take the ONE planet we have to test it or would you rather take the safe path just in case. It is your choice make the right one.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
