Negative Praise On Social Media | The Odyssey Online
Start writing a post

Here's the thing: I am constantly on social media. I love using Twitter, and it's usually the first thing I check when I wake up. Most of the time, I get on there to watch comedic videos or read tweets that make me laugh. I also read some of the posts copied from Tumblr, because they catch my eye. I can usually scroll through my feed without a grievance, but there are some days when I just have to stop myself and wonder, what in the world is going through the minds of the people on this site?

I've seen so many posts in the past few years about how people "hate the world" or how they "don't have feelings." My least favorite thing to say is someone saying that they "do not care at all any more." I'm just stunned when I see these things. It is impossible to not care about anything at all–I have tried plenty of times.

When did being cold and detached become cool? When did having pride about having "dark souls" become a trend? Why do people think it's okay to "hate everyone and everything?" People romanticize the idea of being able to hate the entire human population, and that baffles me. Hate is so heavy. I don't understand why one would want to hold on to it. I could maybe understand it if these people had some type of proper reasoning for their behavior, and some of them do, I'm sure.

The thing is, I can also tell that some of these users are just posting these things because they feed off the negative thoughts that run through a person's mind when they are at their lowest. All the retweets, re-blogs, and favorites make them realize that they could help fuel a generation with hatred, a generation that already faces enough scrutiny on a daily basis for being odd. That is evil. These kids are not lost, they're seventeen-year-old Tumblr fanatics.

This saddens me because a majority of the people who post these things have a life that some would kill for. People who really have every single reason to say they have a "dark soul" are too busy bettering themselves or wishing they had the life this teenager is complaining about. There are people out there wishing they had someone or something to care about or even care about them, yet this teenager on Twitter is claiming to be in a worse situation. I feel like they were hurt a few too many times in their short life span, and they they may now think that is how life is always going to be. They want it to be easy for them, but in reality, life will never be easy all the time. I just cannot comprehend why anyone would praise being so disenchanted with life.

In conclusion, this behavior is not "cool." I know that some cannot help how they are, but it's one thing to be 'dark' and another to constantly brag about it. Having a dark soul is not cute or funny; that is not how you want to live. If more people in this society would smile or even just say "hi" as they walk by someone, things would be more positive.

Bad things happen to everyone, but you need to be strong enough to recover and become better. You have not met everyone, so stop saying you hate people. You have not done everything in the world, so stop saying you hate everything. Take a look around, stop being so ungrateful, stop blaming the world, and at least attempt to live a brighter life.

These negative thoughts have become respectable, and that is one of the biggest flaws in our society right now. Get off the computer, go outside, enjoy nature, get lost in a book, and spend time with people that make you laugh.

Life is too short to make being sad a fad.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
