If you think this is going to be some article that is going to use the importance of news reporting to segue into any conversation about politics, then stop reading right now. I do not possess the skill to talk about politics when I lack the education for such a touchy (and yes, it is touchy) subject.
Within recent weeks, we have all been exposed to a lot of extremely upsetting news going on around the world. What is happening in the world is saddening and I wish we did not have to live in a world where upsetting news is now more of a norm than ever. When it comes to the news we all heard about the terror attacks in Europe and the internal violence of our nation, it can be pretty hard to hear about that all the time.
Just the other day, I noticed a lot of my Facebook friends talking about how upsetting the news is and how they wish the news could just stop or they could just stop all that negative information. Now, I understand why people are saying this. As I said, we are living in a world where sad news is more common than good news. When inundated with that kind of information, you definitely wish that there was less upsetting information to hear every day.
However, we need the news to be reported, even in the bad times.
As someone who is an aspiring reporter, I think it is important that people know what is going on in the world, even when the world is a bit of a mess. We rely on the news because it keeps us informed about everything that is going on in the whole planet.
My thought is that the news needs to be reported so we can know about the world around us and what we as people can do to change it. Let’s face it, if the news was not reported on an hourly basis, we would not know about anything going on around us. When we do not know what is going on around us, we may not even pay attention to something and miss a chance to make this world a better place. In missing a chance to improve this world, it will only cause more problems down the world.
I am not saying that you have to like the news. Believe me, you have every right to not like hearing about horrible stuff all the time. However, these events need to be brought up because it keeps them in the public eye. When things are kept in the public eye, it gets us to create a dialogue between people about these kinds of things. In doing that, it can unite people and help them find a way to do something in their community to cause change. Without the news, none of that is possible.
If you want to put positive news out there to counter all the bad things we hear, then exercise your right as a citizen reporter. This does not mean you need to get a news story on a major network. Rather, it allows you to make use of this beautiful thing called social media and put something positive out there. Building communities and making a change in the world starts with your community, so you should be reporting acts of good things in the world so people can have something to remind them that not all news is upsetting news. We want news, we need news and we need to know about news.
Just do not say that we should not have news reported, OK?
