For anyone who has missed yesterday’s live broadcast of First Lady Michelle Obama’s address, it was quite a beautiful speech; much like any of the speeches the First Lady has always given. But this one was important as she outlined the current theme of the 2016 Election.
The First Lady expressed her deep empathy towards the women who have been victimized by the GOP nominee's hurtful comments and actions towards objectifying women. "I can't believe that I'm saying that a candidate for President of the United States has bragged about sexually assaulting women." She said she couldn't stop thinking about it and how it has affected American women.
At the same time, she made sure she wasn't directly naming Trump but instead she emphasized on the candidate's actions being intolerable. "This is not politics as usual. This is disgraceful," she said. She also added, “this wasn't just locker-room banter. This was a powerful individual speaking freely and openly about sexually predatory behavior, and actually bragging about kissing and groping women, using language so obscene that many of us were worried about our children hearing it when we turn on the TV.”
Indeed, it was important for FLOTUS to focus on these issues because these things have been happening too often and not only in politics but in real life. This was the right time to focus on these problems and it serves as a wake up call to people who still hold the mindset that women deserve to be treated the way they are treated.
“I listen to all of this and I feel it so personally, and I'm sure that many of you do too, particularly the women. The shameful comments about our bodies. The disrespect of our ambitions and intellect. The belief that you can do anything you want to a woman.”
The First Lady went on about how women have always had to work harder than men to prove their worth, “but here we are in 2016 and we're hearing these exact same things every day on the campaign trail,” she intoned.
I feel that this was absolutely necessary at this time, when we’re just weeks from the Election, for the deeper issues to come to the surface. The first lady underlined that it isn’t just about politics, but it’s about basic human decency. And I agree with her, and obviously we don’t want our generation and the next to be learning this. While there are men who think this way, there are also men who are deemed wrong because of the actions of some men. The First Lady called this an insult to decent men everywhere.
I am not one to take a side to who I support because I don’t understand American politics, but we surely don’t want the future President of the United States to behave this way. Just how the FLOTUS believes, “we need someone who will heal the wounds that divide us, someone who truly cares about us and our children, someone with strength and compassion to lead this country forward.” She also believes that Hillary Clinton would be the right person because she has used her knowledge and education to do exactly that.
I applaud the First Lady on being so demanding with her argument because I feel the same way, and I’m sure you do too. We can make change happen, but first we have to change our mindset. We have to open our eyes to the truth, that it is always the women who face the worst. But we have to think differently, we have to have hope.
“Hope is important. Hope is important for our young people.”
