America country that I love, you have failed me once again

If being Muslim is wrong, and being gay is a sin

Ignorance has prevailed and racism runs over.

Is my life worth no value? Is my right to choose no longer?

I am a minority twice, being "Black" and a woman,

Is democracy over? Is the rapture coming?

New York City is a mess and the racists chant

"We hate Muslims, we hate Blacks, we want out great country back,"

but when was it great? Let's walk through history and see things my way

Maybe with the Trail of Tears, with the genocide of the Natives

When kings and queens were uprooted and chained on a slave ship

Then told they were not human, our lives not legit.

Sold as property and our country allowed it

Not good enough, but good enough to pick cotton.

To raise their children, while ours were and are still forgotten,

Enough with this though we were emancipated

We got our freedom, yet we are still hated.

Was it great with the Jim Crow Laws and segregation?

Penitentiaries were created from former plantations.

Let's not forget our women who had to assimilate,

Change their wool hair to silk like White women to be great.

To pass off as White got you by

Sorry Hun, the one drop rule still applies.

My hair is natural, I'm done being told that in order to be beautiful

I have to have fair skin, particular facial features, straight hair, and light colored eyes.

I have been asked, "What are you? You have to be mixed because you are pretty to be a Black girl."

As if being Black is disgusting and all women are not beautiful pearls

In the workplace the same hairstyles that my ancestors wore

Is deemed unacceptable, unprofessional, and a bore.

Was it great with The Immigration Act of 1924?

When the beautiful immigrants crowded our shores.

Now the cycle is complete the racists have spoken

To be Mexican means rapist, and they are threatened by anything foreign.

They hate us, would never want to be us, but like to appropriate our culture

From our dancing, to our hairstyles, and our facial features.

Let us walk in their communities, we'd be looked at as creatures

Was it great when my people couldn't vote?

Both women and "Blacks" I belong of both

It was my first election and my vote did not count

I thought we were getting somewhere

already climbed the mount.

Was it great when my grandmother had to leave Alabama in '66?

With my mother and aunt because her friends were being lynched.

Is it great now that our children, allegedly innocent and pure,

Are attacking one another, symbolizing that being racist does not mean you have to be mature.

Is it great that expressing our frustration with democracy as college students deems us to be "spoiled brats who did not get their way?"

Yes, because America is great again when in fact it is a shame

Congratulations my fellow Americans and welcome to the Commencement of the 76th Hunger Games.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
