My Mom Became a College Student For A Weekend, And It Was Incredible

This past weekend was my sorority’s Mommy Daughter Weekend, and it was such a blast.

I was really afraid that my mom and I would fight a lot or that she would embarrass me, but it wasn’t like that at all. I can honestly say, it was probably one of my favorite weekends in Athens so far.

I waited all day for my mom to get here Friday evening, but of course, she was late because she drives slow and traffic was a problem. We were both so excited to go to the Gymdawgs meet that night because she used to be a gymnastic coach, and I used to be a gymnast. It was a real bonding moment because we both love the sport and we both love the Georgia Bulldogs. Sadly, the Gymdawgs lost, but it was a really close competition and the gymnasts all did amazing.

That night after the Gymdawgs meet, I took my mom to downtown Athens. We met up with a lot of my sorority sisters and their moms and we went from bar to bar as a big group. It was so much fun, and surprisingly all the “strict” moms eventually loosened up. I took my mom to Sand Bar, Hedges, and Generals that night, and I would say Hedges was her favorite because she got to dance however she wanted. My mom was the life of the party, everyone loved her and her fun dance moves! Everyone in our group left before 12:30, but my mom was a star; she lasted downtown until 2 am!! Just like an actual college student.

I got us an Uber back to my dorm, and we were both asleep by three a.m. that night. I live in East Campus Village, which is a dormitory that has apartment style dorms, so my mom was able to sleep on my couch instead of paying for a hotel room. My mom was a champ the next morning, she was up by eight and getting ready for brunch at my sorority house. I, on the other hand, barely woke up with enough time to get ready and had a pretty bad headache.

Brunch at my sorority house consisted of meeting lots of moms, eating lots of catered food, and taking lots of pictures in front of the Mommy Daughter banner. My mom got along with the other moms so well that I think she found some new best friends. After brunch, the rest of Saturday was spent shopping at mine and my mom’s favorite stores, then it was back to my dorm to get ready to go out again! Saturday night, my mom, roommate, and I went out to Bourbon, Cabin, On The Rocks, and Generals. She even got a college guy’s Snapchat, which is better than I can do. That night, we only stayed out until one a.m., but none of the other moms came out, so she still beat everyone else!

Sunday was my mom’s last day in Athens, so we met up with my brother, who is a junior at the University of Georgia, for lunch and grocery shopping. My mom and I had an amazing weekend together. I was so sad to watch her drive away because that meant the amazing weekend of mother daughter bonding was over.

I’m excited for her to come back to Athens in the following years because she’ll now know plenty of my sorority sisters and their moms.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
