Thanksgiving is an important time for us to stop and be grateful for everything that we have been given. Christmas is a time where we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ by giving each other presents.
So now that I've cleared that up, let me get to my main point. I believe that America has forgotten all about the meaning of Thanksgiving and what it means to our culture. The pilgrims had suffered a harsh winter, but the next year they were prosperous thanks to the local Native Americans. The pilgrims and natives had a massive feast because they were THANKFUL for what they already had.
Call me a Scrooge but in America, we've seemed to have forgotten to be thankful, and we need to only celebrate Christmas after Thanksgiving. I love listening to Christmas music, decorating the tree, and putting up lights just as much as the next person but only after Thanksgiving.
Black Friday sales and shopping has slowly creeped upon Thanksgiving, taking millions of retail workers away from their families for the holiday. We as Americans are so eager to get our hands on the next big thing or the best sale going on, we have become more greedy and jealous and less thankful.
I started Black Friday shopping in 2011 with my mom and since then the stores have opened earlier and more people show up. Honestly I find it pathetic that people would skip a Thanksgiving meal with their families just to shop. This year, some stores are set to start their deals at 6pm on Thanksgiving Day. You can bet your last dollar that I will not be supporting those stores this year. We've basically forgotten the whole idea behind Thanksgiving and we just want more physical objects.
Also, can we please stop playing Christmas music the day after Halloween? I'm sick of hearing these songs for two months straight. And I don't want to see Christmas decorations on sale either! Seeing Christmas trees and Santa Claus in September make me feel so repulsed.
Americans are not longer grateful for what they already have. We have become so self-centered and impatient that we rush to Christmas without acknowledging the most important holiday that is unique to our culture.
So go ahead and enjoy your turkey, pilgrims, and cornucopias for Thanksgiving. But please for Pete's sake, hold off on celebrating Christmas until Christmas.
