My Homage to Larry (and Others)
Veggietales Wiki

If you think Veggietales is just for kids, you just don't get the show, man!

For those of you who don't know, Veggietales is a Christian children's show, starring talking vegetables that communicate valuable lessons, many of them Biblical. It was arguably the biggest part of my childhood growing up, and there are actually some aspects of it that I like even more now than I did then!

One of the things people like best about the show was a middle-of-the-show segment called "Silly Songs with Larry," which was the part of the show where Larry the Cucumber would come out and sing a silly song. Now, a lot of people who grew up with the show have their favorite silly songs. And those favorites probably vary a lot, depending largely on which period of Veggietales you grew up with. Today, I am going to pay respect to my personal hero by listing my top 10 favorite silly songs.

What, you thought we were done with top 10 lists forever? You have been mislead.

Just because I felt bad leaving some out, here are the top 5 that just barely got rejected.

1. "Larry's High Silk Hat"

2. "Lance the Turtle"

3. "The Yodeling Veterinarian of the Alps"

4. "Donuts For Benny"

5. "A Mess Down in Egypt"

Now, without further ado, here is my very silly top 10 list...

10. "The Water Buffalo Song"

This one deserves all of our respect. It's the one that started it all! I actually like this one more now than I did when I was younger. It's not the song that I find funny so much as how Archibald Asparagus comes in at the end and brings an unexpected dose of reality that comes as a relief to those of us struggling to suspend our disbelief!

9. "The 8 Polish Foods of Christmas"

I admit I actually haven't seen the episode this song came from, "The Little Drummer Boy." I know the song because it was actually on a Veggietales Christmas CD from the 90s, and I thought it was funny when I heard at as a kid, and was very happy when I was told they finally put it in an episode. Of course, it's a parody of The 12 Days of Christmas, it showed me some Polish foods I wouldn't have otherwise known about, it makes me hungry, and I love it!

8. "The Hairbrush Song"

Now, don't freak out on me. I know this is every Veggietales fan's favorite silly song, but I personally just happen to find other songs on this list to be more enjoyable and funny. I do find it quite humorous how Larry is so desperately searching for his hairbrush, despite having no hair. Adding to the comedy is how the Narrator treats this story as if it's serious, intense drama!

7. "Dance of the Cucumber"

It's in Spanish, with Bob translating. The song is funny enough, but then Larry gets his translator to start dissing on himself! What's not to love?

6. "Pizza Angel"

A bit of a more recent one than some of the others. (Recent? This song is 11 years old now. I am old.) I just love this one because it's so darn catchy. Also, who hasn't been in this situation of waiting for their pizza before? And, if the truth were known, I think we've all suspected the delivery guy of eating our pizza at least once...

5. "Bellybutton"

A little bit weird: Just a song about not having a belly button. But I do find it clever all the boy band cliches they put into this satire!

4. "The Song of the Cebu"

Honestly, I'm not entirely sure why I like this one. It did come from the first Veggietales episode I ever saw, "Josh and the Big Wall." I guess I do also find it funny how the ever-hyperbolic narrator advertises this as a major multimedia event, and it's just Larry showing slides. Also, there's that one picture that everyone seems shocked by and Larry seems embarrassed by. It's up to you what's in it...

3. "His Cheeseburger"

(Sorry, Mom.) This one may just be the most catchy silly song thus far, and it's not even from Larry! After the Song of the Cebu didn't go as planned, Archibald kind of cancelled Silly Songs with Larry temporarily, and that's why this song happened! Kids won't get that this "love song" about a man trying to win back a cheeseburger is actually a satire on a guy feeling bad for cheating on his girlfriend. And that's why I still love the song today!

2. "I Love My Lips"

It is simply Larry talking to a psychiatrist about how he has this phobia of losing his lips, and the doctor is taking this completely seriously! Two things about this one: I love how every time a new Veggietales video has this song in it, there's a different guy featured on that flash card. Also, I can recite Larry's rapid-fire monologue about Oscar just as fast as he can. It is a skill that has been honed over a lifetime, and I believe I deserve some recognition.

1. "The Pirates Who Don't Do Anything"

Honestly, this was my favorite as a kid, and looking at it again, I just don't see any reason to change it! I love this song. They openly say they don't want to do anything pirates do, which is good because they don't seem to have any clue what it is pirates actually do! Also, this is the only silly song to inspire a film universe based on it! That, if nothing else, ought to make this one the best!

So, what about the rest of you Veggie lovers? What are your favorite silly songs! Feel free to let me know below, if you want!

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
