Over these past few years, I have only had one job and that was my junior year of high school. I was a referee for soccer and honestly was too busy during high school to even have a job due to being seriously involved in a lot of activities during high school, but I quickly learned that I really did not even like that job.
To me, it was stressful, especially being thrown into games right away while still having to learn and remember all the calls. Being put in the situation of being already in games while still learning was stressful and overwhelming because I didn’t want to mess up. So, I didn’t last very long with that job. I also didn’t work enough to actually make a decent amount of money so I decided to resign from refereeing for good. I loved soccer and watching soccer and making money while doing that seemed cool, but it was not worth the constant stress. Since then, I have not had another job.
My senior year of high school was a lot like my junior year with being very busy with various activities. Transitioning to college was a big thing. I decided to focus on getting settled in at college and focusing on school instead of having a job, and my parents were completely supportive and open to providing for me for whatever I needed which helped a huge amount. I am extremely blessed to have parents willing to do that!
This summer I had planned to finally get another job and start earning money to save up for things I will need for my house this coming fall such as rent and appliances. I was fully prepared to make my summer all about working and earning that money but soon had to start babysitting my 9-month old niece, which I was being paid for. I decided to consider that as my job because it was a good fit and I was getting paid a decent amount, plus I got to stay in the comfort of my own home, which was super nice! I soon received a call about an interview for a job that I had applied for before I started babysitting that I had really wanted. I was super excited because it was the job I had wanted — also, it will be my first interview!
I have never had an interview before because refereeing just required some classes and then you got to start working, but now I have an actual interview and it really makes me feel like I am growing up, which is not only awesome but pretty scary. For the most part, I am a pretty shy person. I have trouble talking to strangers so that part of it makes me very nervous, but the woman who called me was extremely nice and welcoming and that made me feel tons better about going through the interview process. Being in a Hospitality Management major for school makes this a lot easier because we went through a mock interview for a class and upon getting more information at how interviews work and what kind of questions they ask, I feel a lot better going through this process because I feel like I am prepared enough to do really well and answer any question with a reasonable answer which eases my nervousness quite a bit! I am honestly really excited to go through this interview because it is a new experience and this job is something I would have fun doing. Fingers crossed that everything goes well. Being precise about what job I want turned out to be the best thing that could happen to me!
