In this modern world, we tend to get wrapped up in our own lives, concerned only with our own well-being and neglect the needs of other lives around us. After finishing my first semester in my tiny dorm room, lonely as could be, I swore to myself that I would adopt an animal to help with the stress and missing home. About two weeks ago, I brought home my very first pet (well, one that I would be solely responsible for). I did not go out and buy her, she wasn't a kitten (she is actually two-years-old and is as sassy as she could be), and her previous owner had surrendered her to the shelter. She recently had kittens then was spayed, AND caught the "cat flu" from being in the shelter. It was safe to say my little Lola needed some TLC. Below are some of the things that have brought me so much happiness since adopting her:
The joyful purrs when I come home
After I've been at work or away for a few hours from my house, she runs up to me and purrs and rubs her tiny head on my leg. It has become my favorite part of the day. Seeing how happy she is to see me makes me feel so loved and needed. You could be your fur baby's whole world and I truly believe that shelter animals are the most loyal of all.
De-stressing with playtime
My petite princess becomes eight pounds of pure happiness when I bring out her toys to play. When I get her mouse on a stick out and see how much she loves it, I totally forget about the stresses of my day. I forget about anything that might have bothered me or made me upset that day. Pets are always grateful for your attention and will be there for you when you need it the most.
The best cuddle buddy around
Cats do sleep a lot, but so do college kids who love spending their off time with a nap. We were basically meant to be pet mom and daughter from the start. There's nothing better than waking up to the cutest face in the world laying right beside you!
I hope that this gets you thinking about adopting your next pet. With all the pets sitting in shelters all around, it's time to start thinking about adopting your pet -- not shopping for one. My shelter pet turned out to be the sweetest cat (most of the time -- she's still got a little spunk in her) and she has meant the world to me.
