My best friend has four paws, fur and gives the best kisses you could ever want. I have had Paco for roughly four years. As I typed that, I couldn't believe that he has been mine for so long. Guess time really does fly when you're having fun.
The day I adopted Paco will always be special to me. Taking a rough looking scared dog out of a bad situation was enough to make me overjoyed. To go from being chained outside and abused to a loving house where he got everything he needed was a big change for him. We had some obstacles in the beginning that we sometimes still have to work through. Since Paco was abused, he feared men. This was a huge problem since I lived with my dad half the time. He eventually warmed up to dad but still hates men in general. From birth defects and abuse, Paco is special. His front knees are basically backwards. It never seemed to bother him but I fear it will in the future.
Now, I'm sure you're wondering why I wrote an article on my dog. To me, he is not just a dog. He is basically my kid and best friend. At this point I couldn't imagine my life without him. So, that being said, let me tell you about what it's like when your dog is your best friend.
Leaving my dog has definitely been the hardest part about going off to college. Walking away from him not knowing when I will see him next kills me. I Skype my mom just to talk to my dog. Sometimes I even talk to him on the phone. Living without him is hard because I miss out on some of my favorite things.
On a daily basis, I look forward to play time and cuddles with my Paco. From running around to just playing tug of war, he is full of energy. He is also the embodiment of a fat Albert. At times he eats more of my food than I do. Since my dog is my best friend, I always think he's the cutest dog in existence. No one can ever convince me he's not. I have even canceled plans before just to hang out with my dog.
Granted, I try not to do it very often but it still happens. Since we don't actually know when his birthday is we just base it on when I got him. We often "celebrate" his adoption date. By celebrate I mean he gets extra love and an Instagram post. My dog is a spoiled brat but his puppy kisses make up for it. Even though he is a dog, he's there for me when I need him. Sometimes he just sits on the end of my bed and stares at me, but he's there.
Being a dog mom is the best possible thing to me. My little fluff ball is my world. No human will ever come between the bond I have with my dog. As I am packing up my life to head back to school, all I can think about is how much I'm going to miss him. Not waking up to puppy kisses and tail wags is something I'm not looking forward to. However, I know being separated for now is for the best because someday I'll be able to provide the best dog life possible for him.
