For those familiar with his work and those who he worked with, it was very saddening to hear that Garry Marshall had passed away. If you love shows that make you laugh and warm your heart then Marshall’s films and TV shows are for you. One of things I remember most about his work is the characters rather than the actual plot. His filmography shows a number of hits in both film and television. His ability to direct and work with stars creates characters that are unforgettable through time. In case you have no idea who Garry Marshall was and what stars I am referring to, I'll list a few. Stars such as Ron Howard, Robin Williams, Julia Roberts, Richard Gere, Anne Hathaway, Héctor Elizondo, Bette Middler and so many more have had the pleasure to work alongside such a talented man. Whether you are a fan or a novice when it comes to Garry Marshall, here is a list of films and television shows you should watch. *Note: These are ordered chronologically and do not reflect a hierarchy created by the author. However the list is chosen by author and is not a reflection of Marshall’s entire filmography.
1. "The Dick Van Dyke Show" (1961-1965), writer
This family sitcom follows Rob Petrie (Dick Van Dyke) and his wife, Laura (Mary Tyler Moore) as they deal with work, family, and suburban shenanigans. If you like ‘Bewitched’ then you may enjoy this show as well!
2. "Happy Days" (1974-1984), creator
The catchy theme song should be enough to lure you. If you ever wondered what growing up in the 1950s and 1960s were like then the story of Richie Cunningham (Ron Howard) is for you. When all else fails, watch it for Fonzie (Henry Winkler).
3. "Laverne and Shirley" (1976-1983) creator
This show is a spin-off from "Happy Days" which follows the two female characters as they live on their own and learn to date in the city. Marshall’s sister, Penny plays Laverne and she is also a director of films like "Big" and "A League of Their Own."
4. "Mork & Mindy" (1978-1982), creator
Another spin off of "Happy Days" which follows the story of an alien named Mork (Robin Williams) as he explores Earth. This show was created based on the overwhelming success of Robin Williams on one episode of "Happy Days."
5. "Overboard" (1987), director
Goldie Hawn steals the show as a socialite who lost her memory. Kurt Russell plays the handy-man verbally abused and financially set back by her. Her punishment is to be his wife, which includes taking care of his out of control children.
6. "Beaches" (1988), director
If you are okay with crying your eyes out and believe in a lifelong friendships then this film is for you. Nothing else to say but you should watch it.
7. "Pretty Woman" (1990), director
Okay if you are one of the few people who managed to avoid watching this movie, then this is your chance! Yes, if a prostitute can find love then anything is possible and Julia Roberts’s performance is full of energy and fun. Richard Gere’s character is smooth and suave, which makes for some hilarious and steamy interactions.
8. "The Princess Diaries" (2001), director
Growing up as a young girl, I immediately was drawn to this film and Mia Thermopolis (Anne Hathaway). She’s smart, independent, and just happens to be a princess. Plus her grandmother is played by Julie Andrews. If you want to fall in love with Anne Hathaway all over again then stop reading and go watch it. NOW.
9. "Valentine’s Day" (2010), director
This is the first of a few films where Marshall used holidays to bring large character casts together. The magic of love and the interwoven stories makes this film a must see. There is no real major plot except that all of the characters are connected in some way.
10. "New Year’s Eve" (2011), director
Similar to the previous film in many ways Marshall explores the wonder and miracles happening in New York City. Again, this features an all-star cast with relatable characters. If you are in the need of a happy, feel good film then this one is a must see!
Whether or not you have seen any or all of these films/shows, do not forget the legacy left behind by people like Garry Marshall. This man provided a lifetime of entertainment for Americans across the country. Take time to look for the smaller character details and traces of his humor. I believe there is no better way to pay respect to such a long and successful career than to watch the artist’s work, finding threads of happiness and connection along the way.
Thank you for the laughs. Rest in Peace, Garry Marshall (November 13, 1934 – July 19, 2016).
