Music Is Always There For You

Music Is Always There For You

No matter what I have gone through, music has been there for me. Whether I am having the worst week or the best week, music has gotten me through it. Music is so easy to access nowadays, so why not listen to it all the time? I constantly have my headphones in, because without music I would not know how to deal with the obstacles that are constantly being thrown in front of me.

Stress is something I think every college student feels, and sometimes it's hard to get under control. With the power of music, my stress level goes from a 10 to a five instantly. If I feel like my head is about to explode from the amount of stress I'm under in school, I find a playlist on Spotify that is called "Stress-free" or "Relax and Chill Out," and turn it up. Being able to lie in my bed and listen to these playlists make me destress and put my life in perspective almost. I notice that yes, I do have a lot of work to do, but it's not the end of the world and I'll get that paper done by its due date. Having music as an outlet is always a good option, because you can clear your mind for a bit and then start fresh with what you have to do.

While music helps when you are stressed with work, it is also great to listen to when you are studying or just doing basic homework. It is impossible for me to do homework when it's dead silent. I get caught up in my thoughts and start becoming distracted with almost anything. Having music playing quietly while I study makes me focus more on what I should be doing rather than thinking about what I have to do in the future. Classical music or any sort of music without lyrics is the best for me because lyrics can be distracting at times, but when you just have a certain melody, that can be helpful with going through your work almost effortlessly.

Working out is also something that I try to do every so often. Without music, I don't know how I would get through it. Music is the perfect motivator for working out, especially when it has good lyrics and an upbeat rhythm. The right kind of music makes a workout go by faster and sometimes makes you actually enjoy what you're doing. You feel like a badass, too, which gives you a boost of confidence even if you look like a wet tomato (AKA me).

Whether you're going on a road trip or just cleaning your room, music can always create a certain vibe to any situation, and that's what makes music so amazing. It can bring you back to a memory in an instant or change the way you're feeling in a second. Music can bring people together and set a mood for any situation. This is why music is so extrodinary, and without it I honestly have no idea how I would be able to get through my day.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.

For a moment your world is spinning. The phone alarm has just scared you awake and you’re flooded by daunting thoughts of the day ahead. You have three assignments due and little time to work on them because of your job. You’re running late because you’ve hit snooze one to many times after yesterday’s long hours. You dizzily reach for a hoodie, craving its comfort, and rush for a speedy exit, praying you will have time to pick up coffee. Does this sound familiar?

Finals week is upon us. It is a magical time of year during which college students everywhere flock to the library in attempt to learn a semester's worth of knowledge in only a week. For some students, it's their first time in the library all semester, maybe ever. Others have slaved away many nights under the fluorescent lights, and are slightly annoyed to find their study space being invaded by amateurs. While these newbies wander aimlessly around the first floor, hopelessly trying to find a table, the OGs of the library are already on the third floor long tables deep into their studies.
