The next song matters

What Music Means To Me

Recently Pandora, a popular music app, released an unconventional television ad using a new slogan The Next Song Matters. Usually I’m really impatient and with the remarkable invention of DVR can skip right through the many commercials that interfere with my television watching, however, you apparently can’t skip through live TV yet, but give it a couple years. Regardless, I saw the new Pandora ad for the first time and was honestly kind of taken aback.

The commercial consists of a variety of interviews of ordinary people explaining what music means to them, how music makes them feel, and then ends with the slogan The Next Song Matters. I know it’s sounds slightly cliché, but this ad basically left me at a loss for words. I was/still am in awe of how well they were able to capture the essence of how powerful music is.

In my honest opinion, music is one of the most powerful things out there… A song can bring you to tears, can make your heart race, and can make you feel. It can be that one song that makes you drive irrationally in circles while screaming your heart out. It can be that one song that makes you feel yourself before the club. It can be that one song that’s just so silly and ignorant that you can’t help but laugh.

There’s a reason certain songs remind you of something that’s happened in your past. The power of music and our ability as human beings to relate to it on a variety of emotional levels is something so incredibly beautiful and something we should not take for granted.

It’s honestly kind of crazy to me how much of an impact music has had on me. I can scroll through different playlists of mine and be like yep, that was a breakup, that was my hood-rat phase, and oh yeah, that’s when I was really into Ke$ha. It’sn remarkable how one song can remind you of a time, a moment, or a person. Sometimes music is the closest we’ll ever be to that moment again, and that’s really powerful.

There’s a reason music is used in every culture around the world and why it’s been passed down from generation to generation. Music allows us to feel things, reminds us of things, brings us together, and has an impact on our emotions so profound that it can sometimes leave us in tears, sometimes give us the chills, and sometimes leave us absolutely speechless.

The Next Song Matters. All songs matter.

Pandora came up with an ad and a slogan that reminded me of how beautiful and how powerful music is.

How much I enjoy driving around aimlessly in the car jamming out.

How much I love those songs that can automatically bring me to tears.

How beautiful that one line can be that reminds me of a time in my life.

How humbling it is to automatically think of a person when I hear a song.

How powerful music is and how impactful that one song is.

Music is astonishing and beautiful, it’s powerful, it’s unique, it allows you to feel things so vividly, so personally.

Music is a wild, crazy, beautiful and amazing thing.

Music has had and will always have a significant impact on my life, and that really, really matters to me.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
