The Shadowboxers

We all know Nashville is the Music City. However, before I moved to Nashville I thought it was the Country Music Capitol. I’m sure many other people across the United States assume this as well, but let’s go ahead and completely disqualify that theory. I’ve seen punk bands, hipster bands, folk bands, indie bands, and many other types of bands perform and succeed in Nashville. I might be a little biased, but Nashville is home to some of the most talented musicians I have seen; the best part is anyone can usually walk right up to their favorite band after the show and chat! I wanted to share my top four favorite local Nashville bands with you. Go buy their albums or check out a show!

The Saint Johns

I actually did not discover this band in Nashville. I was at the 30A Songwriters’ Festival in Destin, FL a few years ago, and I just happened upon them playing a very intimate show. This band is absolutely incredible and not only has great music, but also a hilarious side of entertainment as well. I have never laughed harder during a show than when seeing Jordan Meredith and Louis Johnson add comments between songs. On top of the comedic side of their show, their emotion-filled, smooth songs will hook you and have you listening to their music non-stop for weeks. TRUE STORY: I took my two roommates to their concert, and I couldn’t get them to listen to anything else for weeks. They are currently on tour and are keeping a hilarious tour diary over at No Country for New Nashville. But anyways, go check them out. If you get a chance to chat with them afterwards, do it because they’re great people!

The Shadowboxers

I was able to see them a few times since I've lived here, and I was blown away! Let’s just say Justin Timberlake has tweeted about their talent multiple times. If you won’t take my word on how great they are, at least respect JT’s stamp of approval. The Shadowboxers are a jazzy, funky band that will have you dancing in your seat with their catchy songs and impressive dance moves.

They have recently been having a once-a-month show with different themes to celebrate their new Nashville residency as a band. There are still two shows left: one on October 29 with the theme of Michael Jackson's Thriller, and the final show on December 17 showcasing their own music. Check them out-- you won't regret it.

Canyon Spells (previously known as Daniel and the Lion)

This band was seriously my addiction the summer of 2013. They’re a pretty simple band, but they have some soul for sure. They immediately became one of my favorite bands because of the heart they show while performing and the strength of the lead singer's voice.

RAINEY

This band is actually made up of students at Lipscomb University! Okay, okay. So I am biased because of the fact we go to the same school, BUT I promise you they are truly incredible. They describe themselves as Indie/Alternative/Pop. I don't exactly know what that means, but who cares, because their music is uniquely beautiful.

Those are my top four bands from Nashville I have seen while living here. I vote you go watch one of them live very soon! I promise you will not be disappointed.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
