Deciding to come to a university located in a small college town in the middle of Kentucky is not often what most people dream about, growing up - at least I know I didn't. However my decision to move to Murray, Kentucky, and become a Racer was one of the best choices I could have ever made. There is not a single day that I feel any sort of regret for my decision. Here's just a few of the reasons why I think Murray State University sticks out from other college campuses:

1. The community and campus work hand-in-hand

Since Murray, Kentucky, is such a small town, many of the events are centered around what's going on throughout campus. The support the university's clubs, organizations, and athletic teams receive from the community is truly mind-blowing. I mean, you would think any regular season basketball game is like the NBA Finals! The backing from the community is a great way to inspire students to better themselves by joining these organizations and continue to make Murray, Kentucky, better each day.

2. The President, of course

Last year was the first year Murray State had the pleasure of welcoming Dr. Robert Davies as President of the University. This was one of the best things that could have happen to our college town. There's not a soul in Murray, Kentucky, who doesn't know or recognize Dr. Davies, and that's how it should be. He makes it a priority to be extremely personable and real with students, families, etc. He works to help out every need of Murray State, including: moving students into their dorm rooms, cooking and serving in the school cafeterias, and, you know, still doing what the dang President needs to do! His work and service both on campus and in the community has really left a strong impact, and I can't wait to see that continue during his second year here at Murray State.

3. Student/Professor Relationships

I came from a high school where it was normal to be close to teachers who have made an impact on your life. There's still teachers from high school that I go see and grab coffee with every time I visit back home. I was hoping to find a university where I could have those same experiences, and I have done just that. The way professors at Murray State serve students who they see really having the drive to better themselves and take their education seriously is outstanding. Even over the summer, I've been texting and emailing several of my own professors back and forth daily to make sure I'm both fully prepared for the semester, as well as just wanting to keep in contact. Professors will keep things real and treat students just like they would their colleagues. There's a sense of mutual respect that ultimately makes both sides work well together, producing students better prepared for life after college.

4. Organization Opportunities

Possibly the best thing about Murray State University is that no matter who you are, where you're from, and what you're interested in, there is something for you. Whether you're a music nerd like me, a high school jock who just didn't make the cut to play in college, or whatever, Murray State offers numerous opportunities to join clubs and organizations in which you'll meet people who will better yourself, the campus, and the community. These are great ways to form relationships with people just like you, who want to make an impact in the same interests you have. There's nothing you can't find at Murray State. Every opportunity imaginable is possible. I mean, even fencing, like, that's insanely awesome!

Murray State University has provided me and so many other students with opportunities to grow and better ourselves. I know I wouldn't be the man I am without the great people I've been lucky enough to meet and connect with. In just the small town of Murray, Kentucky, someone can truly create the foundation of a successful career in any field and be ready to leave their mark on whatever path they take. The shield that serves as the logo for the university has three stars on it, which stand for hope, endeavor, and achievement. Murray State University has lived up to those three aspects and has made me believe in those same aspects in my own life, which is ultimately why I love Murray State.
