Happy Place

In one month and 15 days, I will be at Disney World in Florida for a six-month internship. OK, so you know how the “Happiest Place on Earth” is Disney Land and Disney World is where "Your Dreams True?" I'm super excited for some of my dreams to come true when I go down to Disney World, but it also mean leaving the place I have called the happiest place on earth for four years! Muskingum University has been a very happy place for me, and there are a lot of ways I made it a happy place for me. Here are just few ways you make Muskingum University a happy place for you too!

Step 1. Go be around people!

My room? You mean the place where I slept? I don’t remember much about my freshmen year room because after the first couple weeks, the only time I was in it was when I was in dreamland. It only got worse sophomore year. My rooms were definitely not the happiest place on Earth for me. Out there where the people are, was my happiest place to be.

Step 2. Join Organizations

I joined nine clubs my first semester here and never looked back. I didn’t have time to be sad, I had things to do! Community service events to plan, kids to mentor and equal rights events to help with. Eventually, I had a student-run recycling program to create and monitor throughout the entire school year.

Step 3. Get Jobs on Campus

Student loans haunt every college student, even when they are in the “happy place.” Getting a few jobs on campus is a great to stay involved and step by step destroy the student loans. I also felt like I was a part of making this community the happiest place on earth for a lot of people by working here. I could put a smile on someone’s face while giving a tour or help any roommate conflicts I could.

Step 4. Join a Fraternity

I love being a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia. First off, I love that it is a mouthful to say. “What is your Fraternity called?” they ask, “PhiMuAlphaSinfonia!” I reply. To which they exclaim “Wboa, can you say that again slower?” “Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia,” I say, cherishing every word. Being in a fraternity is only something you really get if you are in one. It is like a biological sibling in a way—you love all of them even if sometimes they annoy you.

P.S. Mr. Rogers is a Sinfonian!

Step 5. Talk to Your Professors outside of Lecture Material

Some of the best lessons I have had from my professors have been ones that have no context to the classroom. Like where to go in my career, that sometimes support and encouragement is all someone needs to do great things or that hobbies can be just as important as your career.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
