Odyssey Creators Have The Power To Save A Life

0+ Lungs for Morgan Yoney

Odyssey Creators Have The Power To Save A Life

So I write for Odyssey. No surprises there, right?

This means that I get E-Mails about writing, sharing, improvements, yada yada, all about Odyssey. This should also not be a surprise, did you think that we just magically get articles published without any communication?

Anyway, that’s not the point, the point is my train of thought. Now make sure you have your seatbelt buckles and your ticket punched, because sometimes my train of thought goes from the North Pole to Hogwarts and back to reality in three seconds flat, so just bear with me on this one.

Somewhere in my Odyssey communications I learned something very interesting. There are, on average, more Odyssey articles published in one week than there are Police Departments in the U.S. Now given all of the police drama that’s going on in the world I’m sure that last tid bit got some sass. I’m not here to start controversy (because there are good cops and bad cops just like there are good people and bad people, we are all only human) but think about it for a second, all the good that Police Officers do, all the lives they have saved.

Now think about that fact again. There are more Odyssey articles published in one week than there are Police Departments in the states. And that’s only once a week. Imagine after two weeks, or three, that is a heck of a lot of Odyssey articles. We all see them, flooding our Facebook timelines, Twitter accounts and every form of Social Media in between. Odyssey is everywhere. And if Police Departments can do so much good, think about all the good Odyssey articles can do, there are, in fact, more of us than Police Departments.

I am in no way, shape, or form, saying that Odyssey should over run Police Departments, they do their job well and we are just a bunch of people behind keyboards and computer screens, but being behind a computer screen gives us the opportunity to reach the world in a way that police officers cannot.

We, as Odyssey writers, are all over the place, Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, Pinterest, the list goes on, we have a voice that can be heard (or rather, read) a voice that can change the world.

Again, my train is probably going crazy right now; hopefully you’re still with me, because I haven’t even gotten to the important part, the real reason why I am writing this article. The reason that being one article out of 12,000 in a week is so important, I am not just writing this as another college student with a blog, but as an author for a website that hosts people from places I may not have heard of, writing this article I can reach people that a simple Facebook post would not have reached, I don’t know if this will work or not, but if I have the chance to save a life, or at least change a life, I am going to give it a shot.

I am currently residing in a small town called Waynesburg, Pennsylvania, you’ve probably never heard of it. In our town there is a young woman named Morgan Yoney, Morgan has Cystic Fibrosis. She is in desperate need of 0+ lungs, her life depends on it. In 2010 Morgan had a double lung and liver transplant, unfortunately in 2013 Morgan went into Chronic Rejection which has permanently scarred and damaged her new lungs to the point that they currently only work at 25%.

The community has been pulling together for Morgan, posting huge signs, billboards, and flyers were ever the eye can see, and this is my part.

This week I am not asking for shares to get my writing out into the world, but to get Morgan’s name out there, to bring attention to the terrible disease Cystic Fibrosis, so that even if Morgan can’t be helped, someone else can be. This is about more than a blog, or an article, this is about a life, a beautiful, precious, amazing life.

For as long as I can remember, I have been listening to The Beatles. Every year, my mom would appropriately blast “Birthday” on anyone’s birthday. I knew all of the words to “Back In The U.S.S.R” by the time I was 5 (Even though I had no idea what or where the U.S.S.R was). I grew up with John, Paul, George, and Ringo instead Justin, JC, Joey, Chris and Lance (I had to google N*SYNC to remember their names). The highlight of my short life was Paul McCartney in concert twice. I’m not someone to “fangirl” but those days I fangirled hard. The music of The Beatles has gotten me through everything. Their songs have brought me more joy, peace, and comfort. I can listen to them in any situation and find what I need. Here are the best lyrics from The Beatles for every and any occasion.

Small towns certainly have their pros and cons. Many people who grow up in small towns find themselves counting the days until they get to escape their roots and plant new ones in bigger, "better" places. And that's fine. I'd be lying if I said I hadn't thought those same thoughts before too. We all have, but they say it's important to remember where you came from. When I think about where I come from, I can't help having an overwhelming feeling of gratitude for my roots. Being from a small town has taught me so many important lessons that I will carry with me for the rest of my life.

I can't say "thank you" enough to express how grateful I am for you coming into my life. You have made such a huge impact on my life. I would not be the person I am today without you and I know that you will keep inspiring me to become an even better version of myself.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.
