I love summer, don't get me wrong, but I can't wait to be back as soon as possible. I'll take the lack of sleep, overwhelming stress and procrastinated cramming for exams in the best place on Earth, over working 7 days a week all summer and living with my parents (love you, Mom and Dad). Here are some of the things I think we're all missing most about UD this summer, listed in no particular order. Let the countdown to August begin.
1. Late Nights
I've never been one to stay awake into the late hours of the night for no reason. I actually really like sleeping and have proven to be pretty good at it. But what college has taught me is that I can sleep when I'm dead. I'd rather stay up all night watching stupid TV shows and binging on Oreos with my friends than be dreaming about being on the next season of the Bachelor (although I do enjoy that). Spending time with people and having ridiculous, hilarious nights you'll remember is sometimes worth a lot more than getting a good night's sleep.
2. My Major
Although I can’t say I really miss being cooped up in Willard all day, I do miss getting to explore my major more and more every day. My professors, peers and classes genuinely excite me about my future and my career, and I miss learning about what I’m going to be dedicating the rest of my life to. With student teaching coming up, I’m anxious and eager to be back at UD furthering my professional education. I apologize if that makes me a huge nerd, but it also makes me realize I've found what's really going to make me happy.
3. My Walk to Class
Even though it was a total trek from S Chap to Willard every day, I always loved seeing a familiar face. People at UD are genuinely so friendly, and you typically don’t see many people with RBF, especially on a beautiful day. The campus is so active and lively with plenty of people outside, throwing a football or laying out on the Green. I’ve been there for three years and I still smile at how lucky I am to be able to call such a gorgeous campus my home.
4. Main Street
What's not to miss about Main Street? Besides the lack of parking and the ridiculously prompt parking meter cops, it's one of the best places on campus. You can get pretty much whatever you need from the Five and Dime, and there's also Barnes and Noble, for books, or whatever, if you're into that. Main Street's got everything you're in the mood for when you're hungry, from pizza to burritos to hot tots to avo on foccocia's. Whatever you're craving, it's only a short walk away, if you can scrounge up a few extra bucks to afford it. And senior year, there's plenty of bars to hop, just make sure you make the most of your time waiting (a while) in those lines.
5. Chapter
OK, so I don’t actually miss going to chapter (sorry), but I do miss having a scheduled time to see some of my favorite people. Once I get over the anxiety of saying the right thing when my name is called for attendance, it’s not so bad to just sit back and listen to what’s going on this upcoming week, especially if it’s mixers, philanthropy events or formals. (Plus, it’s doesn’t hurt that I get to sit next to the quality entertainment of Betlow and Biddle) Chapter also pretty much sets you up for a library date, since a lot of girls book it to Club Morris right after the “second” to end chapter. For the good and welfare, thanks for encouraging me to be studious, ladies.
6. UDCSB
If you ever have to opportunity to play a club sport in college, do it. UD Club Softball has meant the world to me and given me some of my favorite college moments. This team has taught me responsibility, time management, and how to truly enjoy my first childhood love. Having the opportunity to travel to Georgia for Nationals three years in a row is something I’ll always be missing, especially with the girls that make every single moment so memorable. And finishing sixth in the country isn't so bad, either.
7. Dages, duh
This one is pretty self-explanatory… I mean who doesn’t want to be showered in beer from the roof of a frat house while singing “Shout” at the top of your lungs? That’s because dages make people happy. You rally, put on your sundress and your sunglasses, and hop around Newark until you find your perfect dage with the cutest dage dog, or at least until you find one that hasn’t already been bopped by our pals from the Newark PD. And then, after you’ve enjoyed your full day of daging, who can deny that post-dage Chipotle? Not to mention, that post-dage, post-Chipotle nap, which always ends up being the best nap of your entire life, even if you wake up wondering what year it is. Once you figure that out, your first thought is that you can't wait to do it all again next weekend.
8. "Broad City" and "Bob's Burgers"
This past semester, I got into two of the greatest shows on TV right now. Constantly watching and re-watching episodes, quoting them, and waiting for new ones to come out is what my weeknights consisted of. Both of these shows have formed a special place in my heart, not only because of their hilarious content, but because I watch them with my best friends. Of course, both these shows are available online to watch whenever I need a laugh, but watching them without my people just isn’t the same.
9. S Chap
I have to admit that South Chapel and my house are definitely some of the things I'm missing most about school. First, S Chap is such a fun place to live. Surrounded by students, there always seems to be people outside and music playing on a sunny afternoon. As for my house, I wish I could live there forever (OK, not forever, since I would really love a dishwasher at some point). My bed at school is way more comfortable than my bed at home, and I miss our famous couch that people come over to nap on. Our doors are always open (figuratively, that is) and we have a firm belief in the phrase, "the more the merrier." Our house is so cozy, cute and homey, and it's totally ours. Not to mention, it’s filled with some great company.
10. Independence
When you go away to college, you begin to let go of your hometown responsibilities and break away from your parents as you develop into an adult. Lemme tell you, adulting is hard. I definitely do not like paying bills and interviewing for jobs, but I've absolutely fallen in love with the independence I have when I am away at school. I've learned how to prioritize my responsibilities, and I've also learned how to be self-sufficient, but not afraid to ask for help when I need it. This summer, I'm definitely missing the freedom to come and go as I please, without my parents prodding about where I'm going and when I'll be home (yes, they still ask that), but I more so miss the independence to make my own decisions, make my own mistakes, and take pride in my own accomplishments.
And last, but definitely not least, the thing I'm missing most this summer:
