Why I Miss My Roommate

A college roommate can turn into a best friend.

A person will live with multiple people throughout their lifetime. They’ll live with family, friends, even just acquaintances. They might love the person they share a home with, or even hate the person they share a home with. College is one of these instances in which you must share your living space with another person, and lucky for me, I adore my roommate.

The concept of living in an enclosed space with another person (especially a random one) in college can be worrisome and nerve-wracking, and often ends in a crash-and-burn situation in which the two despise one another and barely communicate. This, overall, leads to an excessively uncomfortable living situation. However, on the other hand, your roommate just might become your best friend. I am blessed to have a roommate that I miss so much, being away from her for winter break.

I miss my roommate because she brings out the best in me. She pushes me to get my school work done, even if Netflix in bed is all too tempting that day. She encourages me, and she praises me when I do well. She’s the best study partner, and the best gym partner as well.

I miss my roommate because of the little things she does. My roommate will leave Post-It notes on my desk for me; notes that say sweet things such as, “Have a great day!” or “Let’s watch a movie tonight”, and when I have a big exam, “You got this”, or “I believe in you”. Little, simple things like that can absolutely brighten my day. Our room can get pretty messy, and I’ll come back from a long day of classes and the room will be clean, for she’s put in the time and effort to clean it. Those, I’ve found, are the best surprises.

I miss my roommate because she’s always there for me. After a particularly long day, or especially when I’m missing home a lot, she’s always there for me to come “home” to. I can always count on her hugs, and that she’ll put a smile on my face.

I miss my roommate because of the sense of comfort I feel around her. We know each other like the back of our hands; we each know what makes the other tick. For this reason, our living situation is comfortable and the lines of communication are open.

I miss my roommate because we always have the best time together. Whether it’s jamming out in our room to the “Summer Hits of the 2000’s” Pandora station, or taking the PATH train to the mall, or exploring our college town, she’s my partner in my crime. No matter what we’re doing, we seem to always have fun. Our personalities mesh perfectly.

I am so blessed to have the roommate I do, and am looking forward to the rest of this year with her. I miss my roommate for I know in the short semester we have lived together, we have already built a lifelong friendship.

Taylor Swift in orange dress playing a moss-covered piano on stage with bright lights.

A three-and-a-half-hour runtime. Nine Eras. Eleven outfit changes. Three surprise songs. Zero breaks. One unforgettable evening. In the past century, no other performer has put on an electric performance quite like Taylor Swift, surpassing her fans ‘wildest dreams’. It is the reason supporters keep coming back to her shows each year. Days later, I’m still in awe of the spectacle ‘Miss Americana’ puts on every few days in a new city. And, like one of Taylor’s exes, has me smiling as I reminisce about the memories of the night we spent together.

Today I started my third week of college at Minnesota State Moorhead. I have survived welcome week, finding my classes on the first day, and being an awkward loner in the dining hall. Even though I have yet to be here for a month, I have already experienced many thoughts and problems that only a new college student can relate to.

"Make sure to get involved when you're in college!"

We've all heard some variation of this phrase, whether it came from parents, other family members, friends, RAs, or college-related articles. And, like many clichés, it's true for the most part. Getting involved during your college years can help you make friends, build your resume, and feel connected to your campus. However, these commitments can get stressful if you're dealing with personal issues, need to work, or aren't sure how to balance classes and everything else going on during the semester.

In college, one of the essential things to have is friends. Yes, textbooks, a laptop, and other school supplies are important but friends are essential. Friends are that support system everybody needs. The more friends you have the better the support system you have. But you also have someone to share experiences with. And don’t settle for just one or two friends because 8 out of 10 times they are busy and you are studying all alone. Or they have other friend groups that do not include you. Don’t settle for just one or two friends; make as many friends as you can. After the first couple of weeks of college, most friend groups are set and you may be without friends.
