6 Things That Happen When You Have Young Parents

The truths and misconceptions about having parents who don't look much older than you.

6 Things That Happen When You Have Young Parents

My parents were 22 years old when they welcomed their beautiful daughter (me) into the world. So yes, I have young parents and throughout my life I've experienced some of the same old things because of this circumstance. I think there are some misconceptions about what it's like having young parents, but also some truths.

The first thing that usually always happens, ever since high school and even now, is that people always ask my mother and I this question, "Are you guys sisters?" We both laugh and either of us responds, "No, she's my mom/daughter." Deep down, I you're flattered, mom, but you're justified in being so because you're one hot mama!

The second thing that usually happens is when your friends just met your dad and the second he steps away, one of your friends whispers, "Your dad is hot," and all your other friends nod in agreement. (Roll my eyes)

The third thing that happens is that the people you associate yourself with have this preconceived notion that your parents are "cool" simply because they're young. Let me tell you that that is not the case whatsoever. They are just as strict and difficult as any other pair of parents out there.

The fourth thing that happens is that you, over time, see how cool your parents truly are. It is because of their age that they are able to connect with you a little more. It is because of this connection that you can rely on them and trust them like one of your best friends.

The fifth thing that happens is that you and your mom share clothes. I wouldn't be able to tell you the amount of times I've gone into my mom's closet or vice versa because we have grown to have the same style.

The sixth thing that happens is that you get mistaken as your siblings parent. I can't tell you the amount of times I've been out with my little brother Jacob, who is 6 years old, and people have asked me, "Are you Jacob's mom?" HA. HA. NO. Why do people quickly assume mom? Why not sister, cousin, babysitter, aunt? Anything but mom, please.

All I know is that I wouldn't trade those suckers for anything in the world. They're my rock. And if you also have young parents, then tell them how much you appreciate them because they've made some big sacrifices for YOU.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
