14 Reasons Why Studying Abroad Is Not Cliché
Olivia Wurm

With endless opportunities in the palm of a millennial's hand, studying abroad is sadly becoming a cliché idea. Well, I'm here to tell you that if you decide to embark on a journey of learning in a different land, your life will be immensely changed and your eyes will be opened. Those that have studied abroad, whether it was a homestay or through a university program, will never cease to talk about the life-altering, exciting, new, and amazing learning experience they enjoyed. And, try to encourage you to study abroad, too.

1. Everyone studies abroad, you should, too.

Negative. Everyone does not study abroad. The people that do choose to learn in a different land end up learning far more about the culture and about themselves in relation to the world around them. Again, it sounds cliché, but I really can't express it any other way. And if a lot of your friends are studying abroad with you, more power to your friend group for stepping out of the norm and living somewhere totally new.

2. You will never have access to such inexpensive flight fairs again unless you live abroad sometime later in life.

Barcelona, London, Paris, Zurich, Budapest, Istanbul, Dublin -- just a few of the places you can travel to for 50 -100 euro... the equivalent of $80 - $135. Not a bad deal when you are going on multiple weekend getaways.

3. Checking, "Walking down the streets of towns you've dreamed of," off of your bucket list becomes a challenge.

Because if it wasn't enough to just Google at one place, you might as well go see as many places and countries as you can, learning and taking in as much as you possibly can! Sure you have 5-ish months, meaning nine weekends, but that's nine trips to new countries you could be going on instead of just going out and getting wasted.

4. The landmarks that you've seen in famous artwork become your favorite study spots.

Though you'll see tourists from countries you didn't even know about, you begin to tune them out and focus on your work and the beauty of the landmark. Maybe it's the Trevi Fountain, or a cafe by Big Ben, or the grass next to the Eiffel Tower, these massive structures have captured you and helped connect you to the city that has become your second home.

5. You love to pretend to be a tourist and feel it's okay to make fun of them because this is now your second home.

In Rome, if one wants to throws a coin in the Trevi Fountain, it must be over the left shoulder to assure the hope of returning to the Eternal City.

Sure we've all been there, done that-er, been a tourist that is. But, now that this is your city, you get to giggle and secretly point at the crazy tourists. Maybe even partaking in the infamous tourist activities for yourself once in a while -- that is if you do it correctly.

6. Hostels are not at all like the psycho stories you hear about. In fact, proved to be fun!

We've all heard those scary stories about a friends' cousin's best friends' brother that went to a hostel in a different country and contracted some horrendous disease and the hostel was haunted and he now sees ghosts, yadda yadda yadda. Though you do have to read the reviews and ratings to make sure it is credible, hostels are really fun when they have organized programs like pre-(homemade) Sangria-gaming then a bar crawl down the La Barceloneta or half-priced tickets at the Cheese Museum in Sweden. These perks make all the difference between a high priced hotel and a youthful hostel.

7. Even if you don't know anything about a destination, that will absolutely be your favorite town in the end.

You're here to travel, to explore, to go see the world-so do it! Some of the very best experiences come from not knowing anything about a place and learning so much about the language, people, and culture that you ultimately want to move there-this obviously happened to me, in more than one city.

8. Don't forget to explore your own town you have temporary residency in!

While traveling is nothing to shake a stick at, the town you are living in is amazing in its own ways, too! That's why you decided on living there for crying out loud! Finding a favorite cafe, restaurant, and great hidden spot to sit and marvel at the beautiful city makes you feel even more at home where ever you are living!

9. The food. Duh.

Yes, the artwork is amazing... I could never paint the Sistine Chapel. Yes, architecture is incredible...I certainly can't even come close to attempting Sagrada Familia. But, when you've had that first bite of pasta al dente and you are left dreaming of the limone and fragola (lemon and strawberry) gelato, you realize that nothing really beats out the amazing food experience you have studying abroad! And that's the truth.

10. Get to know cultures, customs, and the language.

In order to have the most rewarding experience, this trifecta of culture, custom and language is a must anywhere you go! Culture is the food, the people, and so customs are the specific celebratory holidays and events important in that country. And language, well that's easy. By utilizing all of your available resources and opportunities, you grow as a person and learn about who you are in relation to this fantastic world we are a part of.

11. You will meet people in every town you venture to, I guarantee it

Those people you meet, you will form relationships with. Whether it be an actual fling or the owner of a restaurant you thoroughly enjoyed, people enjoy hosting travelers who bring a sense of curiosity with them on their travels. Always keep your curiosity handy and never limit yourself to anything or meeting anyone. Whether you stay in a hostel or an AirBnB, you are bound to meet random people that make a moment in your life that much better just because you met them! Pro tip: Use Facebook and Instagram as a way to stay in contact with those people...it never hurts to know people in several different countries.

12. When problems arise, you now handle situations like an old pro.

Flashback to when you missed a flight or did not even have the correct ticket for the flight. Flashback to when the cab took you 47 minutes out of the city at 3:30 a.m. Flashback to when you had to help your drunk friends compose themselves so you didn't all get kicked out of the club. Flashback to all of the times you were lost in every country you traveled to. All of those experiences made you the pro-problem solver you are today! Congrats!!

13. The people you meet become your friends for literal life.

Whether you like 'em or not, you just can't get rid of that person that you roomed with while studying abroad. You shared so much: from laughing at dumb tourist things you accidentally did to whining about your loud neighbors playing annoying music to the most memorable weekend trips you went on with him or her. Those people you grew close with while studying abroad will never leave your side and be there for you in the future. For when you need a traveling companion or just another chit chat, your pal you met studying abroad will 100 percent turn into your forever best friend.

14. You will forever cherish the sense of wanderlust that studying abroad opened your mind and heart to.

Through this experience, you gained a lot: friendships that are like family, new meaning in life, a stronger purpose, a love for new places and ideas, open-mindedness, curiosity, an adventurous side, the list goes on! Always preserve that sense of wanderlust and remember,"Not all those who wander are lost."

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
