Relationships According to Millennials

We've lost the essence of dating.

Our relationships, or lack thereof, have revolved around social media with our eyes glued to our phone screens. Why have we turned to social media instead of face to face interaction? Our abilities to interact socially have diminished because we hide behind screens. Instead, we care more about likes on Instagram or how many people swiped right on our Tinder profiles. People no longer meet in person, then decide to date after a period of time wherein they “get to know each other.” Rather, it seems that most friendly relationships are formed on social media. What happened to a guy walking up to a girl and asking her out for coffee or for a nice dinner?

Some people are old fashioned and want to be courted and actually go through the dating process to get into a relationship. However, it seems to be more popular to just "hook up" or partake in "Netflix and Chill," instead of making a genuine connection with another human being.

In my experience of being the friend who hears the stories of “Netflix and Chill,” I imagine the encounter starting out like, “Hi, I’m so-and-so. Let’s do this,” and then it goes from there. After it’s all said and done, there is most likely no contact with both people, and they go on with their separate lives.

This generation of young people doesn't respect others enough to go forward in dating and create good solid relationships. Instead, they want to take the easy way out and just "have fun." They’d rather not think about their futures or how their fooling around is really going to impact their emotional and psychological well-being.

I'm proud to say that I'm one of the few traditional girls left in this generation who enjoys being treated like a princess by a chivalrous man who knows how to treat a woman properly. I myself am in a committed relationship where there is no wondering if the other person is going to seek someone else. We both want to be committed to each other instead of hooking up with random people we don't know or people we know very little about. We enjoy still getting to know each other’s characters, flaws, and quirks bit by bit. We would rather be on the old fashioned side of dating instead of this millennialized version of dating where likes on Instagram have more value than what truly matters—the heart. Who knew getting to know someone face to face would actually be enjoyable and rewarding?

The purpose of dating used to be for people to take one step closer to marriage, so maybe it’s more appropriate to make the assumption that today’s generation isn’t ready for marriage or they’re too scared to truly commit. They’d rather live in the moment and not think about something so “far off” into the future when, in reality, it’s not too far off. Life goes by in the blink of an eye and one day these millennials will wake up and realize that their lives of “having fun” and not putting down some roots isn't really that fun at all.

I’m not saying that living a care-free lifestyle is bad, but it’s just not for every crayon in the box.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

These powerful lyrics remind us how much good is inside each of us and that sometimes we are too blinded by our imperfections to see the other side of the coin, to see all of that good.

Every Girl Needs To Listen To 'She Used To Be Mine' By Sara Bareilles

The song was sent to me late in the middle of the night. I was still awake enough to plug in my headphones and listen to it immediately. I always did this when my best friend sent me songs, never wasting a moment. She had sent a message with this one too, telling me it reminded her so much of both of us and what we have each been through in the past couple of months.

Zodiac wheel with signs and symbols surrounding a central sun against a starry sky.

What's your sign? It's one of the first questions some of us are asked when approached by someone in a bar, at a party or even when having lunch with some of our friends. Astrology, for centuries, has been one of the largest phenomenons out there. There's a reason why many magazines and newspapers have a horoscope page, and there's also a reason why almost every bookstore or library has a section dedicated completely to astrology. Many of us could just be curious about why some of us act differently than others and whom we will get along with best, and others may just want to see if their sign does, in fact, match their personality.

Being a good person does not depend on your religion or status in life, your race or skin color, political views or culture. It depends on how good you treat others.

We are all born to do something great. Whether that be to grow up and become a doctor and save the lives of thousands of people, run a marathon, win the Noble Peace Prize, or be the greatest mother or father for your own future children one day. Regardless, we are all born with a purpose. But in between birth and death lies a path that life paves for us; a path that we must fill with something that gives our lives meaning.
