Tennessee Native Reggie Upshaw from Chattanooga helped lead No. 15 Middle Tennessee State University to victory against the No. 2 seed Michigan State on March 18, 2016. The team led early and never took their foot off the gas.
After a little over four minutes in the game, the Blue Raiders took a 15-2 lead and this momentum carried. Along with building an early lead, MTSU shot 55.9 percent from the field and 57.9 percent from the three-point line. Shooting went well from both teams as MSU finished with 55.6 percent from the field and 45.8 percent from three, but they just couldn’t keep up with the physicality and energy of the Blue Raiders.
Upshaw finished with 21 points, shooting 57.1 percent from the field. But MTSU’s performance was far from selfish as all five starters scored with double-digits when the game was over.
Matt Costello (Linwood, MI) led the Spartans with 22 points, nine rebounds and shot an outstanding 90 percent from the field.
A bracket buster for sure as 91 percent of the ESPN brackets made were set up for MTSU to lose in the round of 32 according to ESPN. 80.9 percent predicted MSU to win in the Sweet 16, 38.6 percent predicted them to win in the Final Four and 22 percent predicted them to win it all.
In the NCAA Press Conference last Saturday, Upshaw and teammate Perrin Buford shared just how amazing it had been to see themselves sharing such a huge moment on TV and social media.
“It's really an honor anytime you can see yourself on TV, see highlights of your teammates doing great things on the court, and then you hear other people speaking so highly of you, it's really a blessing and honor,” said Upshaw.
Last Friday’s upset will definitely go down in history as MTSU is now only the eighth No. 15 seed to ever beat a No. 2 seed in the NCAA Tournament. A No. 15 seed hadn’t beaten a No. 2 seed since 2013 when Florida Gulf Coast beat Georgetown.
The Blue Raiders faced the No. 10 seed Syracuse in the second round of the tournament where their Cinderella run was stopped 75-50.
