Buzzfeed, the self-proclaimed “social news and entertainment company,” has seemingly been on a roll lately. With the increase of “inclusive” videos and articles, covering topics such as gender identity, sexuality, race and the struggles of the oppressed, among others, we’ve been getting a sense of solidarity from their community to ours.
Superficially, it seems like an awesome statement -- a major company giving people a platform to inform the society in which they are otherwise silenced. Upon further investigation, however, we can realize just how problematic these microaggressions are, and how damaging they are to a growing society and the mass groups of oppressed people.
In this article, I am only going to speak to microaggressions that affect the communities I feel comfortable speaking to. I will not address things such as racial inequalities and oppression, the use of the “N” word and anything else covered by Buzzfeed that has to do with things I am not directly linked to, simply because it’s not my place to address them. If you’re looking for articles regarding these things, these articles are great resources for you.
First off, I want to say that I used to be the worst with throwing around slurs and enforcing stereotypes left and right. But I was 13, 14 and 15 years old, and as I grew older and began to understand what oppression and discrimination were, I cut them out of my diction immediately.
My problem with Buzzfeed is that these writers are educated, experienced and grown adults. They are old enough to realize that some of the content they are creating for the world to view is offensive, and borderline disgusting.
Normalizing these microaggressions just enforces the mindset that everything is fine, people are not oppressed and nothing needs to be fixed in today’s society, which definitely is not the case.
So, here we go. Keep in mind, these are microaggressions that I personally have recognized and feel comfortable speaking against. Not everyone may take these things offensively, but that does not make them less offensive.
1. This article, entitled “26 Trans Guys Who Are Way Too Hot to Handle.”
First and foremost, this article is fetishizing transgender men, and turning them into sexual objects. C’mon feminists, you hate cis guys who do this to women, but you’re allowed to do it to trans folk? Nah, not cool.
2. Another one, called “16 Reasons Breakups Are So Much Worse For Lesbian Couples.”
Breaking up, no matter the gender(s) of the parties involved, can be rocky for everyone. Making jokes about lesbians moving in together after the second date, or always getting cats together, or all the flannel they share, isn’t cool. Unless you are in fact a self-identifying lesbian, don’t make “jokes” like these. Got it? Good.
3. And these two videos, about best friends saying “I love you,” and complementing each other.
These videos are so “yikes” it’s not even funny. It’s 2016, and videos of men showing affection are going viral where they’re “showing a softer side,” or expressing emotion because those are “feminine” things to do? What’s so hilarious about men saying how they feel? Why can’t men compliment each other without the act being turned into something to pick fun at? Friends, no matter the gender, should show affection. If we normalize platonic affection, the world would be a much better place.
These are, of course, just a few out of the (what seems like) millions of videos and articles that are produced by Buzzfeed, but these are a few that have stuck out to me as really cringe-worthy.
I love Buzzfeed as much as the next person. Whether I’m looking for news or just trying to kill time, I find myself on their website at least once throughout the day. Buzzfeed has what could almost be called a “cult following” with their audience being so incredibly huge, and they need to keep that in consideration.
Obviously, no one can police anyone else on how they feel for using a term or reclaiming a slur if that’s what they want to do. But a company like Buzzfeed has to be aware of the microaggressions they are enforcing with publishing things like these. It’s not okay, and it’s normalizing oppressed folks yet again being the butt of jokes.
Just take the time to think about what you say and do. That’s all we ask.
