When the clock strikes on that final moment; it feels like a weight has been lifted. School is over which means no homework and no stress. Students rush back home and to their dorms ready for fun times and months of relaxation. But for therapists and, psychiatrists they get a weight on their shoulders the fear of the unknown for those who are they treat. It’s not that the summer means mental breakdowns it can actually be good for some. It’s when leisure becomes neglect that problems arise.
1.Late mornings
Everyone loves that great feeling it feels so carefree. Where the problem comes in for those who take medicine they are on a time schedule and if they miss it by sleeping in they are chemically unbalanced. If this continues it can lead to all sorts of problems such as: trying to make up for the missed dosage by doubling which could cause an overdose, they can go through withdrawal which has its own set of symptoms themselves.
2. Hanging with friends
Having road trips to the beach, trips to the mall and party’s lots of parties sounds like a perfect summer out of a movie. Sometimes too perfect for someone struggling with mental illness; the simple nice things can still trigger bad memories that can ruin a night of fun. A party could turn into a meltdown if the alcohol mix in a bad way. That’s why most say not to mix.
3. High Expectations
It can be hard to be happy in the summer even though that’s the expectation; with sunshine, flowers, and fun what could be wrong with that right. Well there is nothing anyone can do if someone is triggered by say a certain species of flowers that were at a funeral or if this time years ago someone they loved was still here with them. Time and season don’t dictate anyone happiness we just have hope that we can stay happy.
There are downsides to every bad situation but it is great to have friends who will support you when you are having an episode, having a family to understand that there will be times that you are sad for no reason at all. There is no reason to feel bad about it. Just reach out for help.
