4 Measurable Attributes That Will Define Your Happiness

Happiness comes from within.

4 Measurable Attributes That Will Define Your Happiness
Noah Silliman

As an entire human population, can we define happiness? Sure, we can all most likely agree on qualities, facial expressions, and actions that generally "happy" people share, but how can we know for sure? How can we create one concrete definition? How can we all create a scale that measures another person's happiness?

As individuals, it is our natural instinct to care about what others think of us. In other words, we want to be happy with the way others perceive us. It's a compliment to be called a bubbly person, someone whose smile lights up the room, or fun-loving and optimistic. I think that to a certain point, we rely on those comments as morale boosters and forget to focus on the fact that happiness still exists when others aren't around to see it.

The thing is, we've heard the saying "happiness comes from within," but how many people automatically think of that when defining happiness? Happiness is individual, it's unique, it's internal. After everything this life has thrown me, I truly believe that being happy is about being happy when others aren't there to see it, when it's you and only you. Happiness truly comes from within. Although there can not be one specific definition of "happiness" that is better than the next, here are some measurable attributes of happiness:

1. You reflect on the past, but you don't dwell on it.

You're human. The past does cross your mind, but when it does, you take a moment to reflect on how every memory has impacted your life and can positively impact your future. You've accepted that what has happened, happened. You can't change it. It is what it is - and you're okay with that.

2. You value quality time... with yourself.

You are finally comfortable with being alone. In fact, you actually long for the alone time, whether it's a cup of tea and a good book or a long run/workout. You enjoy spending nights snuggled up with yourself as company. When you are alone, you're not lonely, because you are content with the person you are.

3. You can't help but burst out laughing or shine a smile (even when no one is around).

This is crucial. Whether you're driving around, listening to music and having a live concert, reflecting on a funny experience you had the other day, or just smiling when you look in the mirror for the heck of it. You do it and you just can't help it.

4. You're excited about the future.

The possibilities are endless. You see your own potential and you are motivated to act on it. Life is good, and you have a feeling the future will only get better.

So, no. I don't think that as a human population we can pinpoint what "happiness" truly is because it is up to individuals. However, if you are exhibiting some of these measurable attributes of happiness, then you know that you are on the road to being a happy individual! Remember, only you can label yourself as truly happy, so remember to be happy even when no one besides yourself is around to witness it.

Course registration at college can be a big hassle and is almost never talked about. Classes you want to take fill up before you get a chance to register. You might change your mind about a class you want to take and must struggle to find another class to fit in the same time period. You also have to make sure no classes clash by time. Like I said, it's a big hassle.

This semester, I was waitlisted for two classes. Most people in this situation, especially first years, freak out because they don't know what to do. Here is what you should do when this happens.

Ever since I could remember, it was a treat to receive Easter Bread made by my grandmother. We would only have it once a year and the wait was excruciating. Now that my grandmother has gotten older, she has stopped baking a lot of her recipes that require a lot of hand usage--her traditional Italian baking means no machines. So for the past few years, I have missed enjoying my Easter Bread.

I was asked so many times why I wanted to go to a small school when a big university is so much better. Don't get me wrong, I'm sure a big university is great but I absolutely love going to a small school. I know that I miss out on big sporting events and having people actually know where it is. I can't even count how many times I've been asked where it is and I know they won't know so I just say "somewhere in the middle of Wisconsin." But, I get to know most people at my school and I know my professors very well. Not to mention, being able to walk to the other side of campus in 5 minutes at a casual walking pace. I am so happy I made the decision to go to school where I did. I love my school and these are just a few reasons why.
